The Eternals will continue to expand the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it arrives in theaters in the fall of 2020. Marvel Studios has earned a lot of attention for announcing that one of the lead characters of the upcoming The Eternals movie will be LGBTQ, but now it’s turning heads because of a new casting report which indicates the studio may be doing something it’s rarely, if ever, done before.
Gemma Chan, who played the Kree sniper Minn-Erva in this year’s Captain Marvel, is reportedly in talks to join The Eternals cast – but potentially in a different role altogether. The Eternals will be the second and final film that Marvel Studios releases in 2020, and it’s also the second film of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following in the footsteps of Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, the film will dig deeper into the cosmic side of the MCU than we’ve ever gone before. On the Hall H stage during the Marvel Studios panel last Saturday night, actress Tessa Thompson got a big cheer when she said that as the king of New Asgard, her character, Valkyrie, “needs to find her queen” in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder. That was confirmation that we’ll get to see deeper aspects of her life explored on screen in the new sequel, and specifically that the movie will address her bisexuality after a scene that alluded to it was cut from Thor: Ragnarok.
And Valkyrie isn’t the only LGBTQ Marvel Studios character on the horizon: Kevin Feige confirmed that more were on the way, and we won’t have to wait long to see them.

Although Marvel Studios has kept its mouth shut about what movies would follow their “Phase Three” and the release of Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Hollywood can’t keep every secret.
