Luke Skywalker remained out of sight, but never out of mind, through much of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Then he appeared as a bearded Mark Hamill in the final few seconds of the film. But we almost saw a glimpse of Luke earlier in the film, through the tumultuous vision that Rey receives when she picks up Luke’s long lost lightsaber. The twist: he wouldn’t have been played by Hamill but by actor Robert Boulter, in a re-enactment of the famous The Empire Strikes Back duel.

When the Star Wars: Episode 9 cast was announced, the line-up included a big surprise: Carrie Fisher. Fisher died before the release of The Last Jedi, and many assumed her character, Leia Organa, wouldn’t be featured in the next film. According to the Episode 9 cast announcement, director J.J. In case you hadn’t heard, Avengers: Infinity War made a little bit of money at the box office last weekend. The Marvel sequel earned enough to smash the record for the biggest opening weekend of all time, previously set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. In fact, it smashed all sorts of records all over the world. And that meant Lucasfilm had to pass the baton.
It has become tradition for whoever smashes box office records to receive some kind of congratulations from the previous record holder. It’s a tradition George Lucas and Steven Spielberg started as the directors frequently exchanged titles thanks to the success of Jaws, Star Wars, and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. But it’s been kept alive in recent years as well, and Lucasfilm has now continued the tradition by passing the baton, or rather the lightsaber, to Marvel Studios.

Fans didn’t know what to expect when they sat down in darkened theaters for the anticipated return of the Star Wars franchise with J.J. Abrams‘ The Force Awakens. After the familiar opening crawl disappeared from the screen, The Force Awakens drops viewers right in the middle of the action. In a span of minutes, a Jakku village is besieged by First Order troops, Poe Dameron is captured, and Finn gets his tragic origin story.
It’s a sensational start to a great film, but it wasn’t the only opening that Abrams considered. Several The Force Awakens alternate openings were considered by Abrams, several of which were storyboarded. One particularly gripping alternate opening even went into production. You may remember it. The one with Luke’s hand. Now, one of those alternate openings has been given the fan animation treatment.

Movies can change drastically over the course of production. And in a series like Star Wars, where the directors are replaced movie to movie, there will inevitably be some ideas left on the cutting room floor. One of those ideas is the original ending for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Mark Hamill has revealed the original ending for The Force Awakens, which could have changed the entire course of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Last year, the actor revealed that the ending was changed at the last minute, but the nature of what changed has been veiled in mystery. But now, it seems he’s been given the go-ahead to say exactly what that was, or at least, Disney is not watching him as hawkishly anymore.
