The long-awaited Black Widow movie may be delayed once again as Disney considers reshuffling its film slate in the wake of disappointing Mulan box office numbers. That reshuffling may also push the anticipated Pixar film Soul to Disney+, where Disney has found success with its animated films amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

New Soul Teaser

Pixar Animation’s new film Soul was intended to be released earlier this month, but the coronavirus put a stop to that. But now the movie is slated to arrive in November, and even though that’s a long way off, Pixar wanted to show off a little more of the movie while we wait.

A new Soul teaser was revealed during a virtual panel at the Essence Festival of Culture, and not only does it have plenty of new footage from the movie with some truly stunning animation, but it also features the original song “Parting Ways” written, produced and performed by American R&B and neo soul musician Cody ChesnuTT. Pixar is about to get existential with Soul, their latest original movie with a wild premise. Pixar Soul Photo

Next year, Pixar Animation will be bringing two original movies to theaters. It’ll be the first time they haven’t released a sequel in a calendar year since 2015. Onward arrives first in March, but then summer brings a new movie that was announced earlier this year, and we’ve got a new look at it.

Soul, directed by Inside Out and Up helmer Pete Docter, follows Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx), an aging middle school music teacher who has long dreamed of performing jazz music on stage. Gardner gets his chance when he’s booked as the opening act at the Half Note Club, a real jazz club in New York City. But his jazz debut is put in jeopardy when an accident causes his soul to be separated from his body, sending him to the “You Seminar,” a place where souls develop and gain passions before being placed in a newborn child. Pete Docter isn’t just the Chief Creative Officer at Pixar Animation Studios – he’s also one of the most talented filmmakers in their line-up. Now, the director of Monsters Inc., Up, and Inside Out (the latter two took home Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards) is back with Soul, a mysterious new movie set to open next year. An original Pixar movie without a number in its title and Docter steering the ship? Tell us more, please.

Thankfully, we did learn more about this film at the D23 convention, where we were finally able to put some context to the incredibly vague synopsis.
