Smash and Grab

Pixar, the Oscar-winning animation studio that once wore Hollywood’s animation crown, is in a bit of a creative transition following John Lasseter’s exit from the company. As they begin to establish their identity under new leadership, they’re looking for fresh directorial voices – and they’re finding them thanks to the SparkShorts program, an experimental storytelling initiative that serves as a sort of developmental league for filmmakers.

The first short from this program, entitled Purl, hit the Internet last week, and now they’ve released Smash and Grab, a new sci-fi short about two robots who break free from their laborious jobs and try to take control of their own lives. Check it out below.

Pixar Smash and Grab First Look

Pixar and Neill Blomkamp seem to have the same, exciting idea — when you’re in a creative rut, turn to the thing that helped you break onto the scene in the first place: short films.

We learned in May that Pixar would be getting in touch with their roots by launching an experimental short film division. Now we get a sneak peek at the fruits of their labors with the first images from the division’s first film, which is titled Smash and Grab.

Smash and Grab

When you’re an Oscar-winning director, you can go to the movies and walk out with your next project. That reportedly happened for Danny Boyle, who saw Havana Marking‘s 2013 documentary Smash and Grab: The Story of the Pink Panthers and immediately decided he wanted to turn it into a narrative. So that’s what he’s going to do.

The documentary tells the behind the scenes story of the world’s most successful jewel thieves and the underground world of the international drug trade. Pathe and Fox Searchlight will co-finance the remake. Read More »
