(Welcome to Not Dead Yet, a feature dedicated to new Blu-ray releases and what special features you should be excited about. Because yes, some of us still like to own physical copies of our movies.)
What a great week for Blu-rays. The Criterion Collection has two must-have releases this week: Jonathan Demme‘s Silence of the Lambs and George A. Romero‘s Night of the Living Dead. Beyond that, we have The Bird With the Crystal Plumage and Re-Animator from Arrow Video, the under-seen drama Only the Brave, and the Lyndon Johnson biopic LBJ. Last but not least, we have an exclusive clip from Roman J. Israel, Esq.

Since the classic thriller Silence of the Lambs isn’t exactly the kind of movie that’s friendly to creating merchandise to commemorate it, there have been very few attempts to bring Hannibal Lecter to the shelves of fans. While there have been attempts by NECA to create a few different detailed figures, most Hannibal Lecter collectibles have been unimpressive. But one company is about to give fans the cannibal collectible they deserve.
Blitzway, the same company behind the impressive sixth scale Ghostbusters figures and forthcoming Ecto-1 that fits the whole team, is coming out with a series of Hannibal Lecter statues that feature an incredible likeness of Sir Anthony Hopkins. Check them out below. Read More »
Plenty of blockbusters and classic sci-fi movies have gotten the collectible artwork treatment from Mondo, Gallery 1988 and more, but the modern classic Silence of the Lambs has rarely been afforded such a tribute. Previously, Mondo had Caesar Moreno create a couple of pieces, and Ken Taylor crafted one a little while back as well. But now it’s Grey Matter Art showing some love for the Best Picture winner from 1991 with a gorgeous new print (and variant) from artist Florian Bertmer.

There’s plenty of heroes out there, but what people really go crazy for is a great villain. Over nearly a century feature filmmaking has delivered some pretty mesmerizing, fascinating and memorable villains on the big screen. But which ones are truly the best?
Well, the folks at CineFix have attempted to answer this seemingly impossible question by counting down the Top 10 Movie Villains of All Time. And don’t worry, Christopher Nolan fans, because Heath Ledger‘s take on The Joker from The Dark Knight is on the list. However, you might not be so happy with some of the choices for best movie villains. Read More »
Even though it may be forgotten by the time you’re done watching a movie for the first time, the opening shot of any movie is integral to introducing the audience to the world and/or characters they’re about to watch for a little while.
It may not seem like a single shot can do much to accurately prepare viewers for the movie they’re about to see, but a new video essay from Now You See It explains how opening shots in movies can tell you a lot about the story you’re about to see unfold. Read More »
After celebrating the Fourth of July for Independence Day with grilling, fireworks and general American tomfoolery, why not ease back into the work week by breaking the fourth wall?
Below you’ll find a supercut of moments in the movies when characters break the fourth wall. For those who don’t know what that means, it’s when a character in a movie looks directly into the camera, addressing the audience, acknowledging that you’re watching their story play out and that they’re in a narrative. From Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to The Wolf of Wall Street, there’s some great moments here.

We all know how Hannibal Lecter likes to eat humans: with fava beans and a nice Chianti. But has anyone ever released an official Silence of the Lambs Chianti? One company has now, and Mondo is making posters to celebrate the occasion.
The Alamo Drafthouse, in fact, has created two wines themed around the multiple Oscar-winning Jonathan Demme film, The Silence of the Lambs. There’s Hannibal Lecter’s “The Cannibal Chianti” and Buffalo Bill’s “Suit Yourself Pinot Grigio,” both of which are now on sale. To drum up interest, Mondo recruited poster artist Caesar Moreno to make two posters for the film, each of which are incredibly specific and directed at true super-fans of the film. They go on sale Thursday, check them out below. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Greg Berlanti is the co-writer/producer on The Green Lantern and The Flash, the latter of which he’s also a potential director. He recently directed his second film, Life as We Know It, and has been making the press rounds to promote it. Naturally, everyone is more interested to learn about his work on Green Lantern and Flash than Hollywood’s latest Katherine Heigl romantic comedy, so he’s being pressed for as much as info as he’s willing to divulge.
Some of what he had to say might surprise you. Read More »
Do you remember those Little Golden Books? They were a staple from my childhood. Pixar Animation Story Artist Josh Cooley (Cars, Ratatouille, Up, George & AJ) is working on an awesome “Lil’ Inappropriate Golden Book” titled Movies R Fun.
Cooley has been working on this compilation of movie art for two years and will be publishing the collection in a book which will be available at Comic-Con this year and APE Expo San Francisco in November. And don’t worry, the books and prints will also be available on Cooley’s Blog. High quality, “classy” prints will also be available as well.
Illustrations reference film classics such as The Professional, Terminator 2, Godfather, Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now, Se7en, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Graduate, Terminator, Silence of the Lambs, and The Big Lebowski. Check out some of the art embedded after the jump.
