Over the last few years, the Walt Disney Company has become marked by its willingness to, essentially, cannibalize itself. The animated films that serve as the building blocks for the massive conglomerate we know today are now fodder for live-action or computer-animated remakes. Couple that with the company’s predilection in the late 1990s and early 2000s to churn out direct-to-video sequels, and it’s almost surprising to consider that, in 81 years, Walt Disney Animation Studios has only created three in-canon sequels. In 1990, there was The Rescuers Down Under. In 2000, they went IMAX-level big with Fantasia 2000. And now, we have Ralph Breaks the Internet, a perfectly decent animated film that, to its credit, critiques its title character, despite being unable to transcend a profound sense that we’ve seen this all before.

What made Wreck-It Ralph great back in 2012 wasn’t the plethora of video game references, but the big beating heart of a movie thanks to the friendship between the titular bad guy and the misfit racer Vanellope von Schweetz. Thankfully, the early buzz on the Disney sequel confirms that, much like the first film, Ralph Breaks the Internet isn’t just chock full of Disney-owned Easter eggs, but it also makes good on the emotional core of the first film and digs into the darker side of the internet.

Ralph Breaks the Internet International Trailer

Ralph Breaks the Internet takes John C. Reilly’s good-natured video game “bad guy” out of the arcade and drops him into the world wide web. How can something abstract become the setting of an animated movie?

Here’s how the production found the story for Ralph Breaks the Internet and built this in-depth new world around it, a process that nearly broke render computers and went through numerous iterations.
