This fall, Dexter’s Laboratory and Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky returns to Adult Swim with an all-new animated series, and it looks like a far cry from what he’s been doing with the Hotel Transylvania film franchise.
Primal follows a caveman and a dinosaur with an unlikely bond as they try to survive the harsh, dangerous prehistoric landscape that is full of some of the most deadly creatures you’ve ever seen. Like some sort of perverted Noah’s Ark, Primal will trap Nicolas Cage on a ship full of predatory animals. And honestly, what the hell more do you need? Can’t you just see that movie in your head already? See Cage running around, screaming that scream of his, as CGI animals leap about with fangs bared? I know I can. And I want it in front of my face immediately.

Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky has spent the past several years making Hotel Transylvania movies: goofy, breezy films that are largely designed for kids and families. But longtime fans know that Tartakovsy’s a man with varied interests – and one of those interests happens to be seeing a dinosaur rip another dinosaur’s face off.

Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator behind acclaimed Cartoon Network shows like Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory, is returning to his old stomping grounds — with a bit of an upgrade. Adult Swim, the adult-targeted TV block on Cartoon Network that aired the final season of Samurai Jack, has picked up Tartakovsky’s latest project: an animated series called Primal. The half-hour animated TV series that will mark Tartatovsky’s return to the small screen after the director helmed Sony’s Hotel Transylvania series to box office success. Fans who can’t make it to Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas from September 23-30 will be able to catch four of the movies playing there from the comfort of their own couch. IFC Midnight, a new genre label of IFC Films, will simultaneously premiere four films at the genre film festival and also on demand in about 40 million homes including those with Cablevision, Comcast, Cox, Time Warner and Bright House.
The films in question are Heartless, directed by Philip Ridley and starring Jim Sturgess, High Lane, directed by Abel Ferry, Primal, directed by Josh Reed and Red White & Blue, directed by Simon Rumley and starring Noah Taylor and Amanda Fuller. Other films playing Fantastic Fest this year include Let Me In, Red, Mother’s Day, Buried, I Spit On Your Grave and more.
