Since making her fantastic directorial debut with The Diary of a Teenage Girl, director Marielle Heller has been lining up some promising projects for herself, including the J.J. Abrams–produced Kolma and a gay rights drama based on the documentary The Case Against 8. She’s now added the Fox Searchlight comedy Can You Ever Forgive Me? to her busy schedule, which will star Melissa McCarthy (The Boss).

It is a great week to be Marielle Heller. Just days after we heard she’d be teaming up with J.J. Abrams and Daisy Ridley for Kolma, the Diary of a Teenage Girl helmer has added another promising project to her to-do list. J.J. Abrams and Daisy Ridley first joined forces to explore a certain galaxy far, far way, but now they’re looking to extend their relationship beyond the Star Wars universe. The pair are reuniting on Kolma, a fantasy thriller to be produced by Abrams’ Bad Robot. But Abrams isn’t directing this time around. Coming-of-age indie narratives are a Sundance staple each year, and this year one of the most buzzed-about was Marielle Heller‘s The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Based on the novel by Phoebe Gloeckner, it stars Bel Powley as Minnie, a teenager growing up in 1970s San Francisco.
