Almost Famous is a favorite among many of the /Film staff members (both present and past), but the movie hasn’t been beyond criticism despite being loved by many entertainment journalists since its release nearly 20 years ago. In the years since, contemporary views have called out the movie for being one of many in the 21st century to utilize what has come to be called the “manic pixie dream girl,” a cliche female character often used in films to teach broodingly soulful young male characters to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures. But director Cameron Crowe doesn’t see the character Penny Lane, played by Kate Hudson, as fitting into that criticized trope. Read More »

Chadwick Boseman can’t seem to get enough of playing prolific black historical figures in biopics.
After putting on his dancing shoes as James Brown in Get On Up, Boseman’s latest turn is as the first African-American Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in the simply titled Marshall, when he was just a strapping young lawyer who can punch guys. It’s nice to see that the Black Panther training is paying off.

A biopic about legendary comedian Richard Pryor has been developing long enough that Eddie Murphy was once considered for the lead role, but has since been hired to play the father of the iconic comic, who will instead be played by Mike Epps. The project finally seemed like it was on track to make it in front of cameras with Lee Daniels at the helm, but the filmmaker behind The Butler and Precious has now fallen away from the project, leaving it without a director.

It’s almost time for another holiday centric comedy from director Garry Marshall. However, this time the cast of Mother’s Day doesn’t seem quite as packed to the gills with celebrities as its predecessors Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve. Instead, it’s Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson, Britt Robertson, Sarah Chalke, Shay Mitchell, Jon Lovitz, Aasif Mandvi, Timothy Olyphant and Margo Martindale starring in the movie, which follows multiple interconnected storylines.
Now a new trailer introduces some characters we haven’t met before, including Mitchell (who debuted the trailer across her social media channels) as Olyphant’s new girlfriend — which doesn’t really sit well with his ex-wife, played by Aniston. Watch the new Mother’s Day trailer with your mom or significant other after the jump. Read More »

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have a thing for real-life drama. The pair are just coming off of Lone Survivor, an account of a Navy SEAL mission to kill a Taliban leader, and are about to dive into Patriots Day, about the events leading up to and around the Boston Marathon bombing. In between, they have Deepwater Horizon, about one of the worst manmade disasters in history.
In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded near the coast of Louisiana, springing a leak that would flow for another 87 days (making it the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history). Of the 126 crew members on board at the time, 11 were killed and another 17 were injured. Berg’s film follows the courageous men and women who tried to prevent the disaster, and then, when the worst happened anyway, valiantly worked to save their colleagues. Watch the first Deepwater Horizon trailer below. Read More »
Less than a year after the disastrous BP Oil spill, a film based on the tragic event was already in the works. Back in 2014, director J.C. Chandor was attached to helm Deepwater Horizon. Unfortunately, the A Most Violent Year and Margin Call director walked away from the project, citing “creative differences.” Mark Wahlberg was already attached to the film at the time, and following Chandor’s departure, the actor might’ve had a hand in bringing aboard Lone Survivor director, Peter Berg, as his replacement.
Now the film is due out this fall, and today we have our first look. Below, check out a few Deepwater Horizon photos.
