Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won an Oscar last year for writing La La Land‘s “City of Stars,” and they were nominated at last night’s Academy Awards ceremony for their work on The Greatest Showman soundtrack. Though they went home empty-handed last night, losing to Coco‘s Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, Pasek and Paul revealed one heck of a consolation prize: they’ve written two brand new songs for Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin. There’s no place like TV for the holidays. At least, that’s where FOX wants you to spend your Christmas, according to the announcement of its latest live TV musical.
The network announced that Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids) will be starring in a live performance of A Christmas Story, the 2012 Broadway musical based on the classic movie of the same name. And FOX is bringing in the big guns to help move A Christmas Story to the small screen: A Christmas Story Live will be produced by the songwriting and producing team behind La La Land.

The legacy of A Christmas Story won’t end with the Christmas-day “24 Hours of A Christmas Story marathon and the annual conventions and filming location house tour. Peter Billingsley, an actor who is probably best known as Ralphie Parker in A Christmas Story, is executive producing a musical adaptation of of the film for the Seattle stage. Billingsley’s childhood acting efforts lead into a Hollywood career as a producer on Jon Favreau’s directorial efforts and most recently, he tried to direct a feature film — Couples Retreat (we’ll forget that happened).
Benj Paske and Justin Paul wrote the original score, and preview performances will begin on Wednesday at the 5th Avenue Theatre, where the production will run from December 9th to the 30th (click here to see a schedule).
