Bird Box was Netflix’s big winter event movie just before Christmas back in 2018. Sandra Bullock starred in the adaptation of Josh Malerman‘s sci-fi thriller novel of the same name, which takes place in the aftermath of the decimation of the world’s population by an mysterious entity that compels people to commit suicide, usually in a gruesome fashion, after they’ve laid their eyes upon it.
Through flashbacks we see the beginning of the widespread death as Sandra Bullock tries to find sanctuary with her two kids in tow. After Josh Malerman‘s 2014 post-apocalyptic thriller novel inspired the Netflix mega-hit starring Sandra Bullock and that life-threatening viral “challenge,” we’re getting a Bird Box sequel this fall. But wait a bit before you stumble blindly toward Netflix’s homepage — this is a sequel book written by Malerman, who confirmed that his next post-apocalyptic “Bird Box novel,” titled Malorie, will be hitting bookshelves in October.

Whether Universal can convince Andy Muschietti to come back for a Mama sequel remains to be seen, but the studio is sticking with the horror director one way or another. Muschietti has entered talks to helm Universal’s post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box, based on an upcoming book by musician Josh Malerman. The project also brings back Muschietti’s sister and Mama co-writer / producer Barbara Muschietti, who’ll produce along with Scott Stuber and Chris Morgan.
