Jesus Christ Superstar has found its, well, superstar. The upcoming NBC live telecast has cast John Legend as the titular Jesus Christ in a move that is sure to shake up the show’s premiere date of Easter Sunday.
But if anything, John Legend does fit the label of “superstar” quite accurately. A 10-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer who won an Oscar for his song “Glory” from 2014’s Selma, Legend has also stretched his acting chops on both TV and film, most notably appearing in last year’s Oscar-winning La La Land. Not to mention the Tony Award he nabbed for producing Jitney, the revival of August Wilson’s play. Could Jesus Christ Superstar be Legend’s ticket to the coveted EGOT?

Predicting the Oscars is like predicting the weather. You can look at the charts and determine the general course of the storm, but it’s impossible to tell if the wind is going to knock a tree through your living room window. Last night’s ceremony was peak Oscars. Everything went exactly how it was supposed to go before finding time to also uproot the oak in your front yard and cave-in one of walls with it.

Even if you’re not a regular viewer of The Late Late Show on CBS with host James Corden, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of his popular, consistently viral segment known as Carpool Karaoke. In the recurring segment, James Corden hops in a car with a famous celebrity, usually a chart-topping singer but sometimes just another figure in pop culture, and they cruise around Los Angeles jamming out to an assortment of songs in the car, just like you and me. This year, that segment gets its own series.
Carpool Karaoke: The Series will be the first programming endeavor for Apple as they start to expand into original programming. Last night the first trailer debuted in front of the perfect audience during the Grammys, which were hosted by James Corden, and featured a few of the famous faces that he’s shared a ride with before. The trailer shows that Corden won’t be hosting every episode, but there’s quite a cavalcade of talent from across the board to make up for it.

You can hear John Legend on the La La Land soundtrack, playing the kind of jazz music that Ryan Gosling’s character actively hated until it provided him with a steady paycheck. So it only seems appropriate that John Legend cashes in himself by taking on a classic Disney theme song with another chart-topping singer.
Beauty and the Beast has one of the most famous theme songs from any animated movie, and it was all over the radio back in 1991 (and even 1992) thanks to Céline Dion and Peabo Bryson. Now John Legend has been tasked with remaking it along with fellow best-selling artist Ariana Grande (who hosted Saturday Night Live nearly a year ago). Does their rendition of the classic theme song shake a stick at the original?

It’s a tale as old as time, or at least as old as Disney’s original Beauty and the Beast. The 1991 film kicked off Disney’s long-running tradition of commissioning pop versions of their own songs for their soundtracks — think Demi Lovato’s “Let It Go” on the Frozen soundtrack, or Alessia Cara’s “How Far I’ll Go” on the Moana one. Now the studio’s coming full circle with their new live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, bringing in John Legend and Ariana Grande to record a new take on the title song. Read More »
