Scary Short Films

If you want to partake of horror movie thrills this Halloween week, but are pressed for time, I’m here to help. Horror short films have become abundant online in recent years, many of which appear more professionally made than some big budget Hollywood movies. With that in mind, big studios frequently find themselves turning to horror short filmmakers to adapt their shorts into feature films. But few expanded features ever capture the efficiency of the original short films.

Below, I’ve gathered 10 scary short films you can watch right now to get yourself in the Halloween spirit. Some are very short – one only runs a minute long! And some are a bit longer – the longest being a little over 16 minutes. Overall, you should have enough time in your busy schedule to sit back and let these short films give you the creeps.

‘Intruders’ Theatrical Trailer

Be it Sundance, Toronto or South by Southwest, some of the most exciting films to play in any film festival these days are part of the midnight line up. That’s where festivals feel comfortable playing the over the top genre stuff and, last year, SXSW’s midnight schedule included films like Attack the Block, Insidious and Kill List. Now the 2012 schedule has been announced.

The main schedule is already cool enough, featuring the world premieres of fantastic films like The Cabin in the Woods and 21 Jump Street, but at midnight, they’re adding to that with the world premieres of [REC] 3: Genesis, Girls Against Boys and The Tall Man with Jessica Biel. They’ll also screen the awesome anthology V/H/S, John Dies at the End and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s Intruders with Clive Owen, just to name a few.

Before Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) makes The Crow, he’ll have a film out called Intruders. We haven’t known much about it other than that it stars Clive Owen and Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds) features as a priest. Now there is a teaser trailer that makes it look like we’re in for something along the lines of a bigger-budget Paranormal Activity. And while the teaser is appropriately brief, it looks solid. Intacto and 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo hasn’t done much since he helmed the sequel to Danny Boyle’s zombie film. He’s been working on the feature version of the video game BioShock since last summer, but that seems to be stalled. So Fresnadillo is moving on to a horror/thriller picture called Intruders, based on a script by Jaime Marques and Nico Casariego, which will star Clive Owen and Inglourious Basterds vet Daniel Brühl.
