best foreign movies and tv streaming

(Welcome to Pop Culture Imports, a column that compiles the best foreign movies and TV streaming right now.)

It’s the end of 2018 and it feels like it’s been 84 years. But at least we’ve been entertained by plenty of excellent foreign movies and TV shows in the process. As the year winds down and the holidays wrap up, here are a few more foreign movies and TV shows to catch before 2018 ends. This week we have the German answer to Hannibal in Netflix’s buzzy crime drama Perfume, a Danish horror film that more than recalls Rosemary’s Baby, a vampire anime from Netflix, a French-Belgium showcase for Mattias Schoenarerts, and a charming French rom-com series.

James Mangold directing The Wolverine

James Mangold (Logan) will direct a remake of a French-Belgian movie not enough people saw in 2015, Disorder. It’s a very good and very atmospheric and sparse thriller from director Alice Winocour. Last year, screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water) was tapped to write the American remake for Sony. After the script crossed Mangold’s desk, he signed up immediately to direct the film, which sounds like it’ll take some significant departures from the original.

Below, learn more about the Disorder remake.

The trailer for Disorder appears to be selling a paint-by-numbers thriller, but everything else about the movie seems to suggest that there’s more going on here than meets the eye. For starters, there’s Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger in the lead roles and you’d be hard-pressed to name a movie where those two phoned in their lead roles. And then there’s director Alice Winocour behind the camera, who co-wrote last year’s critically acclaimed drama Mustang. Even if the trailer is selling an accurate portrait of Disorder, there’s a definite chance it will be a fair bit more interesting than your boilerplate Hollywood action movie.

Disorder Trailer

Disorder premiered last year at the Cannes Film Festival and Alice Winocour‘s (co-writer of Mustang) drama currently has a 100% on Rottentomatoes. Considering the positive reviews and the actors involved, Diane Kruger and Matthias Schoenaerts, hopefully we’ll see the film, which has yet to be picked up for distribution, sometime this year in the states.

After the jump, watch the Disorder trailer.
