Female-led heist films are officially a trend. With Ocean’s 8 and Widows coming up later this year, a third heist movie is now in the works from indie filmmaker Miranda July. The project is still untitled, but she’s managed to secure Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) as two of her lead actors, and the idea of those two co-starring in a movie is almost enough to convince me to see it sight unseen. What’s that? Acclaimed character actor Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, Bone Tomahawk) is in this, too? Well, then count me in.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a longtime couple finds that the spark has gone out of their marriage, and begin seeking satisfaction in outside affairs. One thing leads to another, the new relationships grow more serious, and it looks like the marriage is about to be over for good. So far, so familiar, right?
But then Azazel Jacobs‘ The Lovers throws a curveball. In this film, the couple, played by Tracy Letts and Debra Winger, unexpectedly find that their extramarital activities have rekindled the passion within the marriage. It’s not long before the spouses find themselves cheating on the people that they were cheating on each other with (played by Aidan Gillen and Melora Waters. Watch The Lovers trailer below. John Travolta + Aerobics – Mechanical Bull = How Did This Get Made?!?!
Nobody sets out to make a bad movie. But the truth is, it happens all the time. And every time it does, there’s a fun misadventure and cautionary tale lurking somewhere behind the scenes. This is that story for Jim Bridges’ 1985 fitness focused feature Perfect. But, at the same time, it’s much more than that. It’s a story about unconventional romances, untimely deaths and how good directors can, on occasion, wind up making bad movies.

Oh, look what Bridesmaids has done for Ellie Kemper: it scored her a gig in 21 Jump Street in her time off from The Office. The feature version of the ’80s TV show is shooting now with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as cops undercover in a high school to root out drugs and trouble. Late addition Ellie Kemper will be a love interest: Ms. Griggs, “an annoyingly sincere chemistry teacher who’s attracted to Tatum’s character and surprised when she discovers he’s not a real student.” (Sometimes casting like this is actually set for some time before it hits the trades, so it is possible Ellie Kemper isn’t as late an addition as she appears to be.)
The key point of interest here (for me, at least) continues to be that the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller wrote and are directing. [Variety]
After the break, Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford is looking like the co-star with Pierce Brosnan in The House Gun, and rapidly rising talent Joel Kinnaman is cast in the Fox Searchlight film Lola Versus, where he’ll dump Greta Gerwig. Read More »
Anne Hathaway is set to play 10-year rehab patient in Jonathan Demme’s (The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia) next film Dancing with Sheba. The Devil Wears Prada star told Black Film:
“It’s a fun premise for a movie actually. Not fun, but it’s a dark comedy. I play an ex-model who’s been in and out of rehab for 10 years and has just come out of a 8 months stay so she’s really serious about it this time, and she arrives home on the weekend of her sister’s wedding.”
Hathaway also revealed that Debra Winger has been cast in the role of her mother. This will be Demme’s first narrative feature film since the badly executed 2004 Manchurian Candidate remake. Sounds interesting. I’m sure Hathaway is capable, and Demme has also made some incredible films. But many people will agree that Demme hasn’t made a good film since 1993 (Philadelphia). Shooting begins this fall.
