Child's Play early buzz

The original Child’s Play came out 31 years ago, and was about a doll named Chucky who was imbued with the soul of a twisted serial killer. Now it’s 2019 and the doll is back in a new reboot, but as director Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) told me a few months ago, “This is a different take. That was one of the biggest things for me, why I wanted to jump on this, because it meant that I could create Chucky as a character looking at the world for the first time.”

The film recently screened for critics in New York, Austin, and Los Angeles, and reviews are starting to arrive. So what’s the word? Does this version of Chucky work, or should he have stayed in the box? Check out the Child’s Play early buzz below.

cult of chucky

In an age where seemingly every significant horror movie has been remade (or rebooted, pick your poison), there’s something to be said about the Child’s Play series continuing to pump out sequel after sequel to the original movie. While the results have often been a little erratic, there’s something undeniably magical about a long-running series churning out movies at a fairly consistent pace over thirty years. After all, what are horror fans to do with their time if they don’t have movies to rank and compare and argue over into the wee hours of the night?

And that brings us to today’s news: Universal has officially announced the existence of Cult of Chucky, the seventh movie in the Child’s Play series the sequel to 2013’s Curse of Chucky.
