The 2010s were a banner decade for female directors. Despite the still abysmally low number of women working behind the camera, women directors have made significant strides in Hollywood and across the globe, earning as much or even more acclaim — and now, as much money — as their male counterparts.

In just the past decade, which came off of Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director, Greta Gerwig became the new generation’s rising star, Patty Jenkins became the highest-paid female director working in Hollywood, and acclaimed indie filmmakers like Chloe Zhao and Ava DuVernay used their weight to land high-profile superhero jobs or boost other rising diverse directors. We still have a long way to go, but the glass ceiling has already started to accumulate plenty of cracks.

Melissa McCarthy gave one of the best performances of her career in Marielle Heller’s Can You Ever Forgive Me?, but in an alternate timeline, things were much different. At one point, Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said) was set to direct, and Julianne Moore was going to star. But six days before shooting was to begin, the project fell apart. Moore and Holofcener both left the project, each citing “creative differences.” Now, Moore has revealed she didn’t deliberately walk away – she was fired by Holofcener.

2019 Indie Spirit Awards Winners

The 2019 Independent Spirit Awards were last night, honoring the best in independent cinema before Hollywood gathers for the Academy Awards. Even though some movies that ended up nominated for Oscars took home trophies last night, the best thing to come out of the 2019 Indie Spirit Awards winners was the love shown to If Beale Street Could Talk. The film from Barry Jenkins movie that didn’t get anywhere near the amount of accolades it deserved from the Academy Awards, but last night it took home Best Feature and Best Director, not to mention further affirmation of Regina King‘s work as Best Supporting Actress.

2019 WGA Awards Winners

Over the weekend, the Writers Guild of America handed out their annual awards honoring the best writing in film and television, and they’re definitely shaking things up in the final week before the Oscars.

While Roma has been the Oscar favorite for some time now, earning the Directors Guild of America’s top honors, Green Book walked away with the Producers Guild of America’s big trophy. Meanwhile Black Panther landed a Screen Actors Guild awards victory for ensemble cast, and the American Cinema Editors awarded both Bohemian Rhapsody and The Favourite. Green Book won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay at last night’s awards show, and that particular train seems like it’s going to continue chugging all the way to the Oscars. Peter Farrelly’s film starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen is one of several 2019 WGA Award nominees, joining films like A Quiet Place, Roma, Eighth Grade, and Vice as contenders for the Writers Guild trophy.
