Armando Iannucci is back on HBO, but this time, he’s not making another political comedy. The Veep mastermind created the science fiction comedy Avenue 5. There series follows a deep space passenger flight in the future where something goes wrong and neither the captain (Hugh Laurie) nor the tech mogul (Josh Gad) who funded it are equipped to handle it.
Iannucci revealed some Easter eggs during the panel, including a gag about the fate of Virgin magnate Richard Branson, and the science that leads to the comedy. Avenue 5 premieres Sunday, January 19 on HBO.

Josh Gad is not the best billionaire salesman, but he does his awkward, creepy best in the latest Avenue 5 trailer, which plays like a very bad advertisement for Gad’s luxury space cruise. In the new space comedy from Veep creator Armando Ianucci, Gad plays Judd Galaxy’s founder, Herman Judd, who uses stock footage and shots of Hugh Laurie to bring us a vision of the future of space travel. Veep creator and In the Loop director Armando Ianucci got bored with political satire a little while back, mostly because the real politics of today are far too ludicrous and depressing to effectively make comedy out of them. But that’s not stopping the masterful comedy writer and director from starting a new series.
Avenue 5 has Armando Ianucci taking us to space aboard the luxurious space cruise ship of the same name. Hugh Laurie is the captain who seems to love his job, that is until the ship encounters a problem and he’s stuck with a plethora of smarmy socialites who are all the kind of people who immediately need to see a manager. Even on a space cruise, people are total dicks. Watch the Avenue 5 trailer below for a taste of what’s to come. Read More »
