It’s the fate of nearly every successful foreign-language film — to be remade in English by Hollywood. But the turnaround came remarkably fast for Another Round, the stellar comedy-drama from director Thomas Vinterberg that walked away with the Best International Film Oscar on Sunday night. And less than 24 hours later, Hollywood struck with the news that a remake was in the works with Leonardo DiCaprio potentially taking the role played by Mads Mikkelsen. Naturally, the internet didn’t respond well. But Vinterberg is holding out a little more hope for the Another Round remake than the rest of us.

Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way, Endeavor Content, and Makeready have scooped up the American remake rights to Thomas Vinterberg‘s Another Round. DiCaprio is set to produce the remake, and there’s a good chance he might star in the film as well. The 2020 Danish comedy-drama from director Thomas Vinterberg stars Mads Mikkelsen as one of four high school teachers who enter into an experiment to consume alcohol on a daily basis to see how it affects their social and professional lives.

(Welcome to Pop Culture Imports, a column that compiles the best foreign movies and TV streaming right now.)

It seems like every month heralds the debut of a new streaming service, or at least a newly rebranded streaming service. And with more and more streaming platforms come more opportunities to watch international movies that you wouldn’t have had the chance to before. Yes, I know that it’s ridiculous to pay for the obscene amount of streaming services out there, but that’s what free trials are for, baby! This month we saw the launch of Paramount+, and with it come a few foreign-language classics that you might have missed. Of course, Netflix, Hulu, and all the rest still have new offerings each month, a couple of which are in danger of getting buried in the algorithms.

So let’s fire up those subtitles and get streaming.

If the ongoing pandemic or the events of the past few weeks have driven you to drink a bit more than you might have otherwise (and who could blame you?), you may be interested in Another Round. It’s a new film in which Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and his pals decide to see if they can live better by constantly keeping alcohol in their blood and drinking only “during work hours.”

But the guys are all high school teachers, so all this may not be the best idea – and deciding to push the boundaries of their own plan also seems like it may not be the best thing for their overall health and relationships.
