Maybe it’s because many of our traditional activities are still verboten due to the pandemic, but there’s a bit of a heightened thrill in seeing two movie characters engage in a forbidden romance right now. God’s Own Country director Francis Lee was able to entice two of the film industry’s best working actresses – Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan – to explore a sweepingly romantic love story in Ammonite, his lesbian romance drama set in the 1840s. The film is now available to watch both at home and in theaters, and to mark the occasion, distributor Neon has released a brand new trailer that you can check out below.

Hear an Exclusive From the ‘Ammonite’ Soundtrack

Ammonite hits select theaters this week, and in honor of the new period romance drama, we’re debuting an exclusive from the soundtrack. The score comes from composers Dustin O’Halloran and Volker Bertelmann, who also handled the music for the 2016 film Lion. Milan Records will release the Ammonite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on Friday, November 13. Hear the exclusive track below.

In the windswept, dreary coastal English town of Lyme Regis lives Mary Anning (Kate Winslet), a paleontologist who searches on the muddy beaches for fossils such from prehistoric creatures that gives Ammonite its name. Living with her mother (Gemma Jones), the two run a tourist friendly shop peddling tiny rocks to those wanting to have a tiny sense of wonder.

In her youth Mary found a particularly spectacular specimen, a nearly intact ichthyosaur, that’s on display without crediting the discoverer at the national museum. Her legacy erased in order to keep the lights on at home, she has spent the rest of her life into middle-age searching for something nearly as spectacular to bring a spark to her increasingly dour life.

After making waves in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women last year, Saoirse Ronan is back with more period drama in Ammonite, and Kate Winslet is coming with her.

Intended as one of the official selections for both the 2020 Cannes Film Festival and 2020 Telluride Film Festival, Ammonite is now slated to premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival. That means the movie is a likely contender for the upcoming awards season, which is bound to be a weird one thanks to all the movies that have been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. But at least we still have some traditional awards fare like Ammonite on our plate, and the first trailer has just arrived, giving us some of the same vibes that Portrait of a Lady on Fire delivered not too long ago. Four years after The Grand Budapest HotelSaoirse Ronan is reuniting with director Wes Anderson for his 10th feature film, The French Dispatch. But while she’ll be reuniting with a few familiar faces on the ensemble movie, Ronan will be working for the first time with Kate Winslet on another high-profile project, a romance-drama titled Ammonite. And yes, both of them will be period dramas.
