Last year, His Dark Materials arrived at the epic fantasy arena with big ambitions and big visions of the future. But the first season of the BBC/HBO series adaptation of Philip Pullman’s acclaimed trilogy had the unfortunate tendency to put the cart before the horse, resulting in a solid but tonally uneven debut season that really just wanted to get to the meat of the story. But now, with the second season of His Dark Materials, we’ve arrived at the meat, and it’s a veritable feast of breathtaking visuals and thrilling adventure.

Dutch author Tonke Dragt‘s beloved 1960s fantasy novel De brief voor de Koning, AKA The Letter for the King, has already been adapted into a movie, but now it’s heading to Netflix as a six-episode streaming series. Between this and The Witcher, Netflix is sparing no expense when it comes to feeding fantasy fans’ appetites while they wait for HBO’s Game of Thrones spin-offs. One of the greatest tragedies of the 2007 The Golden Compass movie (apart from being, you know, not very good) was that its failure prevented us from ever meeting Will Parry, the protagonist of the second novel of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, The Subtle Knife. In future movies, Will, the story’s co-protagonist, would have come into contact with Lyra, the feisty and fierce girl adventurer. Lyra is being played by Dafne Keen in the upcoming BBC-HBO limited series His Dark Materials, and with that adaptation set to venture beyond the events of the Golden Compass, we finally get to meet the strong-willed boy with a sharp wit and an even sharper weapon.
