2015 DGA Nominations

The Director’s Guild of America released its nominations today for awards that will recognize achievement in feature film directing from 2014. The list features two biopics, The Imitation Game and American Sniper, and one film, Boyhood, that was made under circumstances that all but turn it into a biopic of its cast and director, Richard Linklater. But the biopic love ends there, and the DGA has no nomination to spare for Ava DuVernay and Selma. The full 2015 DGA nominations list is below. Read More »

At this point in the awards race each year, support has already crystallized around some of the frontrunners. This year, that group includes Boyhood, Birdman, The Theory of Everything, and The Imitation Game, and the Producers Guild followed the rest of their industry in nominating those titles for this year’s PGA Awards.

It’s more interesting, however, to see which dark horses did and didn’t make the cut. American Sniper and Nightcrawler emerged as two of the more surprising inclusions, while Unbroken and Selma got left out in the cold.

Meanwhile on the TV side, the PGA is all about Fargo, True Detective, and Orange Is the New Black, while shows like Parks & Recreation and Homeland went overlooked. Hit the jump for the full list of the 2015 Producers Guild nominations.  Read More »

‘American Sniper’ Trailer: Bradley Cooper Breaks Down

New American Sniper trailer

There’s a new American Sniper trailer, and if this second look at Clint Eastwood‘s film about decorated Navy sniper Chris Kyle isn’t as tense and perfect as the first trailer, it does show off a lot more of Bradley Cooper‘s portrayal of the man. Here we see Kyle — who in real life was murdered at a gun range while home in the States — as he wrestles with his role as a sniper, and the conflicts that creates with his life as a father and husband.  Read More »

American Sniper trailer

Here’s the first trailer for American Sniper, in which Bradley Cooper plays murdered Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle. Clint Eastwood directs the film, which was adapted from Kyle’s autobiography. Bradley Cooper is also a producer on the film, and it is perhaps thanks to his dedication to the project that American Sniper looks like Eastwood’s best film in several years. Below, watch an intense American Sniper trailer. We see flashes of Kyle’s life, but the nail biting trailer is organized around one very specific wartime engagement that illustrates the moral dilemma inherent in the job Kyle did so well.  Read More »

Clint Eastwood

Briefly: Warner Bros. just firmly planted their Oscar hopeful on the release schedule. They dated American Sniper, starring Bradley Cooper and directed by Clint Eastwood, for a limited release on Christmas Day. It’s the real life story of Navy SEAL and marksman Chris Kyle, which Steven Spielberg was once going to direct.

They’ve also shifted the release date of Guy Ritchie‘s The Man from U.N.C.L.E., starring Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer, from January 16, 2015  to August 14, 2015 and moved the Point Break remake up one week to July 31, 2015. Those two dates are interesting, especially based on the huge openings Disney and Paramount had on concurrent weekends in August. You have to think Warner Bros. is hoping for similar success.
