Last week The Meg overperformed at the box office, but this weekend, it’s time for another title to shine as it swims past the prehistoric shark action thriller.
Warner Bros. Pictures’ much buzzed about romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians surpassed expectations by raking in $25.3 million at the box office from 3,384. That was enough to have it top The Meg, which raked in a respectable $21.5 million in its second weekend. However, not all movies were quite as lucky. Up until last year, Alpha was being billed as a gritty, survivalist tale about a young, lost hunter who befriends an injured wolf. And from the looks of the first trailer, that’s all it would be — with a heartwarming tale of the first boy and his dog embedded within, of course. But after the prehistoric drama starring Kodi Smit-McPhee got pushed back to the summer, it seems like Sony has flipped the marketing entirely in the latest trailer.

Goosebumps 2, which has faced its fair share of speed bumps throughout development, and Alpha, a historical adventure movie about a caveman and his wolf buddy that has jumped around the schedule a few times now, both have new release dates.

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for a new survival thriller period piece called Alpha (formerly known as The Solutrean) from The Book of Eli co-director Albert Hughes. Set in prehistoric Europe, the film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Apocalypse) as a young man who’s left for dead after a fall and who endures harsh conditions by teaming up with an injured wolf.
