When talking about a mid-sized crime thriller set in New York City, “contained” isn’t the right word to describe it. But when talking to producers Joe and Anthony Russo, contained is the right word in comparison to their other recent work. The directors saw 21 Bridges as both a breather from their massive Marvel movies and a callback to the gritty New York crime stories they grew up watching with their dad. The thriller, which was directed by Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones), reunites them with Chadwick Boseman.
21 Bridges is the first major project from the Russo Brothers since the record-smashing success they had with Avengers: Endgame earlier this year. Since then, they’ve finished filming Cherry, and continue developing projects as producers. Now that they’re billed as “the visionary directors of Avengers: Endgame,” they want to support other creatives the best way they can, as Steven Soderbergh once did for them.
It’s a story they told us in a recent career-spanning interview about New York crime stories, life and moviemaking after Marvel, and their unique career paths.

Hollywood doesn’t pump-out many non-franchise action-thrillers these days, so perhaps we should be thankful for 21 Bridges. And perhaps that this movie hails from producers The Russo Brothers, a duo responsible for so many blockbuster franchise movies, is a good sign. But lordy, does the end result have to be so lifeless?
21 Bridges is a yawn-inducing long night’s journey into day, where a supposedly hotshot detective doesn’t pick up on big twists we spot a mile away, and where characters fire off dialogue that’s supposed to be weighty but comes out clunky. You get the sense that 21 Bridges wants to be a throwback to old school police action-thrillers, but you’d be better off avoiding this and renting one of those old school flicks instead.

Following Avengers: Endgame earlier this summer, Anthony & Joe Russo are done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for now. Their attention has turned to their AGBO Films production banner, and the next movie out of the gate as producers for the company will reunite them with one of Marvel’s superheroes.
21 Bridges stars Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) as a New York City detective who arrives on the scene of a drug heist gone bad. Eight cops have been killed in a shootout after two criminals were caught with a huge load of cocaine. But the case doesn’t seem to be as cut and dry as that, and Boseman’s character is intent on finding out exactly what the hell happened, even if it means exposing some corrupt boys in blue in the process. Watch the new 21 Bridges trailer below for a look at the movie. Read More »
