The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.
In this edition, watch the dated visual effects used to bring young Jeff Bridges to life in TRON Legacy given a makeover with DeepFake technology. Plus, take a look back at Joe Dante’s darker, Gremlins-esque take on Toy Story with a retrospective on Small Soldiers. Walt Disney Pictures is still going full steam ahead with their slate of live-action remakes of their animated classics. However, in the case of one of their most famous movies, they’re taking a different live-action approach. Since 101 Dalmatians was already remade into a live-action movie back in 1996 (and even spawned a sequel), Disney is giving the fashionista villain Cruella de Vil her own movie starring Emma Stone as a younger version of the deranged woman who wants to make a coat out of puppy fur.
Now the film, simply called Cruella, has landed a new cast member in Emma Thompson. And come to think of it, she would have made a hell of a choice to play Cruella de Vil in the live-action 101 Dalmatians if Glenn Close had ended up turning down the job. Read More »

How do you build a whole movie around a woman whose claim to fame is trying to kidnap cute little puppies so she can turn them into coats? We wouldn’t know, but apparently Alex Timbers does. The Broadway vet and Mozart in the Jungle co-creator has just been tapped to direct Cruella, a 101 Dalmatians live-action retelling starring Emma Stone as that “inhuman beast.” Read More »
This weekend sees the release of Zootopia, which takes place in a fanatical metropolis where animals of all kind live side-by-side. And talk. And wear clothes. And go to jobs. Yes, this is Walt Disney Animation really doubling down on their legacy as purveyors of anthropomorphized animal entertainment – they’ve been ruling this particular corner of entertainment for eighty-something years now.
And that’s why we’re ranking the top 10 greatest talking animals in all of Disney Animation. Maybe a few characters from Zootopia will be eligible for a revised list in a few years – we have to see how well time treats them.
A few notes before we begin. First: this list focuses on characters who appeared predominately in theatrical releases, meaning that some old stalwarts were deliberately left out. Otherwise, Mickey Mouse would have to be number one based on his prominence alone. Second: in order to be eligible for the list, an animal has to speak in a way that is intelligible to the audience, even if it’s not intelligible to the humans onscreen. Finally: this list is entirely accurate in every way and your arguments about who got left off are completely incorrect. Sorry.

Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella have already been updated, and re-adaptations of Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Mulan, Winnie the Pooh, and Pinocchio are already in the works.
As if all that weren’t enough, just last week Disney announced a Tinker Bell spinoff movie starring Reese Witherspoon. Which got us thinking — what other Disney supporting characters deserve a chance to step into the spotlight? Below are 10 Disney live-action spinoffs we’d love to see. Read More »
