This Is Spinal Tap Reunion

If the upcoming virtual reunions featuring the casts of Wet Hot American Summer and HBO’s Veep weren’t enough of an October surprise, we’ve got another exciting assembly of comedy talent that will rock your socks off.

The cast and writers of This Is Spinal Tap (which includes Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, and Christopher Guest) will be reuniting virtually with co-writer, director and mockumentary co-star Rob Reiner for a livestream event that will be hosted by comedian Patton Oswalt. The good news is that you can pay anything you want to see it. Read More »

A Mighty Wind

(Welcome to The Quarantine Stream, a new series where the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The Movie: A Mighty Wind

Where You Can Stream It: Hulu

The Pitch: Influential (and fictional) folk music producer Irvin Steinbloom has died. To honor his life and contribution to folk music, his children organize a tribute concert featuring his three favorite folk music acts: The Folksmen, The New Main Street Singers, and Mitch & Mickey. Director Christopher Guest follows the concert as it comes together in his signature mockumentary style, and along with the expected laughs, the movie also delivers some truly outstanding folk music.

Why It’s Essential Viewing: The last time Harry Shearer, Michael McKean, and Christopher Guest got together as a musical trio, it was in the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap from director Rob Reiner. Largely improvised and written by the filmmaker and the three comedians, it followed “one of England’s loudest bands,” mocking all of the rock and roll behavior and tendencies seen in real rock documentaries like Gimme Shelter and The Last Waltz. In A Mighty Wind, we see a much different side of them as these three form the much more refined and reserved folk music group The Folksmen, who haven’t seen each other in decades. And to sweeten the deal, they’re joined by pretty much every cast member from Best in Show. Read More »

Best in Show

(Welcome to The Quarantine Stream, a new series where the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The Movie: Best in Show

Where You Can Stream It: Hulu

The Pitch: The tension is palpable, the excitement is mounting, and the heady scent of competition is in the air as hundreds of eager contestants from across America prepare to take part in what is undoubtedly one of the greatest events of their lives – the Mayflower Dog Show. The canine contestants and their owners are as wondrously diverse as the great country that has bred them.

Why It’s Essential Viewing: Christopher Guest has been playing in the fake documentary format since the 1980s. Not only did he write and star in the rock mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap (where he’s responsible for the famous scene where the amps go up to 11), but he brought some of the same comedic sensibilities to Synchronized Swimmers, one of the most famous pre-recorded Saturday Night Live sketches of all time. But for my money, Christopher Guest’s biggest laughs and finest characters come from Best in Show, a mockumentary that follows a variety of eclectic dog owners who are preparing to participate in the Mayflower Dog Show. Thanks to an outstanding ensemble cast and a penchant for improvisation, this movie is pure comedy gold, and there are some good dogs for you to enjoy too. Read More »

Mascots trailer

This fall’s best comedy may be one that’s skipping theaters altogether. Last year Netflix scooped up Christopher Guest‘s Mascots for release, and today it’s revealed the first full-length trailer. The premise is certainly unusual — the film follows a bunch of sports mascots competing for the Golden Fluffy award — but otherwise this looks like a typical Guest movie. Which is to say it’s a mockumentary that looks hilarious in a dry sort of way, full of oblivious oddballs that somehow still come across as strangely lovable.

Mascots also brings back many of Guest’s usual favorite actors including Parker PoseyJane LynchEd Begley Jr.Fred WillardJennifer Coolidge, and Bob Balaban. They’re joined by some newer additions including Chris O’DowdSarah BakerZach Woods, and Tom Bennett (the comedic breakout of Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship). Christopher Guest Family Tree

Mascots marks new territory for Christopher Guest in that it’s his first-ever movie for Netflix. But the team he’s assembled for it will look pretty familiar. Jane Lynch, Bob Balaban, Parker Posey, and Jennifer Coolidge are among the Guest regulars lined up for his latest mockumentary, according to a new report. National Lampoon documentary trailer

This past week, the reboot of Vacation hit the big screen, but it’s not a National Lampoon production anymore. The once thriving name in laughs has since become mostly a comedy memory, known for introducing us to bold and controversial material, future film and television stars, and a film franchise that took us into one of the craziest fraternities and also on one of the best road trips in the history of cinema.

Now a new documentary called Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead: The Story of National Lampoon is on the way to theaters and VOD after a premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the first red band trailer is now online.
