The doctor is out, and The Knick is no more.
The Steven Soderbergh-helmed period medical drama has officially been canceled by Cinemax after two critically acclaimed seasons. The news comes more than a year after the Season 2 finale, which seemed pretty — erm — final for one particular main character.
Spoilers ahead, of course, as we linger on this show’s demise.

For the past couple of years, director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) has been keeping track of everything he watches and reads in a year. Considering he was recently working on season two of Cinemax’s The Knick, it’s kind of astonishing how much entertainment he consumed this year.

It’s only been two years since Steven Soderbergh left behind filmmaking. Ever since “retiring,” though, Soderbergh has found a more than welcoming home in television. The last movie we saw from him was for TV, HBO’s Behind the Candelabra, and he’s about to debut the second season of his show The Knick. I can’t wait for the October return of Steven Soderbergh‘s The Knick, which will be going into its second season. Once again, Soderbergh directs and shoots every episode of the series, and probably does much of the editing as well. This new look at the second season is even more appealing than the last because it teases far more stuff, and far weirder stuff — for instance, what’s up with that fireball blowing up in some surgeon’s face towards the end of this latest The Knick trailer? Here’s a gorgeous teaser for The Knick season two, which comes complete with an announcement that Steven Soderbergh‘s excellent series returns to Cinemax on October 16. Clive Owen and most of the rest of the S1 cast returns, but this time at least part of the story goes to San Francisco along with Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance). We still don’t know much about the thrust of this season, though we can expect it to deal with heroin, further competition over medical advances, and gangsters and loan sharking, for starters.
Not that you’ll see too much of all that in The Knick S2 teaser below, which is mostly lovely atmospheric shots, albeit ones that have a quiet beauty and sometimes even a grand sense of oppressiveness to them. Read More »

Think you’ve got no time to read, watch, and think about stuff on a contestant basis? Steven Soderbergh is here to show you up. While doing post-production on the ten-episode first season of The Knick, and shooting and editing Magic Mike XXL, and prepping a second season of The Knick, and working as exec producer on The Girlfriend Experience TV show and Citizenfour, and probably doing quite a few other things, Soderbergh still managed to take in a steady diet of other films, TV shows and books. I love Steven Soderbergh‘s “retirement,” and we haven’t even seen much of it yet. The Knick, the ten-episode Cinemax show directed by Soderbergh, doesn’t premiere until August 8. When it premieres, we’ll see Clive Owen as a surgeon, or what passed for a surgeon in 1900, when the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York was a barrier of sorts between life and death. Cinemax evidently likes the show enough to order a second season; the show’s renewal was announced today. Season two of The Knick will also be a ten-episode affair, and Soderbergh will once again direct the entire span.

There’s a lot of news today about television efforts from Steven Soderbergh. First, there was the cast info for his Amazon pilot Red Oaks, which Soderbergh is producing and David Gordon Green will direct. Now we’ve got a set of character posters for Soderbergh’s Cinemax show The Knick, which premieres later this year. The show stars Clive Owen as Dr. John W. Thackery, a forward-thinking surgeon at the New York Knickerbocker Hospital at the turn of the century.
A set of posters for the show supports the set of trailers we’ve seen so far, and gives a spotlight to many members of the supporting cast, and also to what appears to be an impressive attention to detail on the part of the wardrobe and production design departments. Additionally, Soderbergh has been talking about the show, and says that the bracing experience of making the first season has him eager to to a second. Read More »
