Making a film so soon about the Boston Maraton bombing understandably makes people skeptical, but Patriots Day is a respectful movie. A film this emotional and unsettling suggests anyone involved in director Peter Berg‘s latest had only the sincerest of intentions. The trailers haven’t come close to capturing the intensity and heartache and beauty of Berg’s latest, but this new preview comes the closest.
Below, watch the new Patriots Day trailer.

Perhaps still reeling from the sheer ridiculousness of Battleship, Peter Berg has devoted much of his past few years to recreating one all-too-real event after another. First there was Lone Survivor, and then there was Deepwater Horizon. Now, as the end of 2016 approaches, there’s Patriots Day, about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and its immediate aftermath.
Berg’s past two films earned critical praise for their grittiness, their intensity, and their attention to detail. Will Patriots Day be cut from the same cloth? The drama made its premiere last night and the first reactions are in. Get the Patriots Day early buzz below. Read More »
Peter Berg already directed one movie this year depicted the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry with Deepwater Horizon. Now he has one more true story coming to theaters just in time for awards season chronicling one of the most devastating terrorist attacks on American soil in the past decade.
Patriots Day tells the story of the Boston Marathon bombing that took place on April 15, 2013, killing 3 civilians and injuring an estimated 264 others. The film focuses on the day of the attack and the manhunt that followed. See how it unfolds in a new Patriots Day trailer after the jump. Read More »

If you liked Deepwater Horizon last weekend, perhaps you’ll want to catch Peter Berg‘s other new movie based on a real-life tragedy and starring Mark Wahlberg as a down-to-earth hero when it opens later this year.
Patriots Day centers on the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing that killed several people and injured hundreds more. Walhberg plays police sergeant Tommy Saunders, who’s present at the scene and in the days that follow, gets involved in the manhunt for the perpetrators. J.K. Simmons, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, and Michelle Monaghan also star. Watch the Patriots Day trailer below. Read More »
For David Fincher’s drama, The Social Network, Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor and composer Atticus Ross teamed up to deliver their first collaboration on a feature film score. Since then, they’ve reteamed with the filmmaker for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, always delivering spectacular award worthy scores. But their next feature film collaboration will see them working with a different director this time.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (who last collaborated on Fisher Stevens’ climate change documentary Before the Flood) will be providing the score for Patriots Day, the Boston Marathon bombing drama directed by Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor helmer, which will again reteam the filmmaker with star Mark Wahlberg. Very little is showy about Peter Berg‘s movies. He’s typically a filmmaker who manages to stay invisible, often successfully trying his hand at different genres. His strengths — his eye for performances and grasp on tension, in particular — are never overt in his movies. He’s a director that can build and build pressure over an extended period and create a great sense of geography with some quick cutting, but again, his skills never draw your attention away from the story.
As the director’s latest film, Deepwater Horizon, hits theaters, I wanted to take a look back at his career so far. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to see Deepwater Horizon before putting together this list, but the reviews are enough to convince me to see it as soon as possible. Below, check out our Peter Berg ranking.
