Director Ron Howard is currently hard at work trying to salvage the Han Solo spin-off on the way from Lucasfilm. The filmmaker stepped up to replace directing duo Phil Lord & Chris Miller after some troubles behind the scenes with producers Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan resulted in them splitting from the project. Even with those troubles, we still know very little about the movie itself, though a few new details have come to light.
Along with news of Michael K. Williams no longer having a role in the Han Solo spin-off, with his character being cut entirely after scheduling conflicts kept him from returning for reshoots, the actor revealed another little tidbit that we hadn’t heard before: the name of Emilia Clarke‘s character in the movie. Production is back underway on the Han Solo spin-off that marks the next installment of the A Star Wars Story franchise films that are being released between milestone episodes of the Star Wars saga. Ron Howard stepped up to replace directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and now that the Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind director is hard at work on set, he’s showing fans a little glimpse behind the scenes.
So far there hasn’t been much to see on the set as Lucasfilm is still playing things pretty close to the vest while in production on the movie that has fans worried following the creative differences between Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and executive producer Lawrence Kasdan and the aforementioned departed directing duo. But today, Ron Howard shared a behind the scenes photo that finally gives us our first look at Donald Glover (or maybe his stand-in) as Lando Calrissian. Read More »
Even though Ron Howard has been officially announced as the replacement director for Lucasfilm’s forthcoming Han Solo spin-off, many are still curious about what happened behind the scenes on the next installment in the A Star Wars Story series of films that began with Rogue One.
The official story was that the directing style of Phil Lord & Chris Miller clashed with what Kathleen Kennedy and Lawrence Kasdan had expected them to do, and their disagreement over the direction of the movie finally came to a head that resulted in their termination with three weeks left in production. But since then, some more details have come to the surface that shed some more light on the situation.
When it comes to stories that dig into the reasoning that saw the original Han Solo directors fired, it all still boils down to creative differences between Lord & Miller and Lucasfilm, but it’s the specifics that are rather interesting, though admittedly also a little gossipy. It includes talk of an acting coach, a reference to Ace Ventura and more.

Yesterday brought the shocking news that directing duo Phil Lord & Chris Miller had been let go from the Star Wars spin-off focusing on a young Han Solo played by Alden Ehrenreich.
At first, only creative differences were cited, but since then we’ve heard more specific details about why the acclaimed and respecting directing team were removed from the project with three weeks of principal photography left on the schedule. The reasoning for a parting of the ways is said to be a clash in filmmaking style. The fast and loose, improvisational approach that Lord & Miller have compared to the more calculated and structured style that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and screenwriter/executive producer Lawrence Kasdan never really met in the middle, and disagreements finally came to a head.
Now Lucasfilm has to find a new director quickly as the studio hopes to be back in production by July 10 (or so we’ve heard), and while Ron Howard is said to be the frontrunner, with names like Joe Johnston and Lawrence Kasdan himself also in consideration, we have a list of filmmakers that we’d like to see finish the Han Solo movie instead.

When it comes to upcoming Star Wars movies, we’ll take whatever new details we can get. Normally we’d relegate something like this to our recurring Star Wars Bits, but since it’s Star Wars Day today, we thought we’d have some fun with some new information about the Han Solo movie that just came to light.
We already know this is a movie about Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich) that will focus on the time in his life from when he was 18 up until he’s around 24, and during that time he’ll meet Chewbacca and acquire the Millennium Falcon. Plus, his old buddy Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) will be around and Woody Harrelson is playing a man named Beckett who mentored Han during these important years. Now we have the names of some new characters we’ll encounter in the movie, and we’re going to try to figure out who or what they are.

Over the past five years, we’ve seen Woody Harrelson get involved in some fun franchises like The Hunger Games and Now You See Me. This year, he’ll go a little darker with a villainous turn in War for the Planet of the Apes, but his biggest franchise role yet is still on the horizon.
Back in January, Harrelson was confirmed for a role in the developing Han Solo spin-off that will focus on the earlier years of the smuggler before he got caught up in the Rebel Alliance’s fight against the Empire. Since then, we’ve learned that the Woody Harrelson Han Solo character would be a mentor to the beloved scoundrel, one who is also a criminal in his own right. Now we finally have a name for the character. Read More »
