Shutter Island Revisited

“Why you all wet, baby?” This question takes on eerie resonance throughout Martin Scorsese’s masterful 2010 adaptation of Shutter Island, which turns 10 today. It’s uttered both in flashback and in the present, by different characters with different emotional weight each time. It’s also part of the key to unlocking this film’s strange, disturbing pleasures. At first glance, Shutter Island is centered around a jaw-dropping third-act twist related to its lead character, a sweaty and determined U.S. Marshal on the hunt for a missing patient at a spooky mental institution on an isolated, stormy island. But if you know the story well enough, you come to the realization that what’s revealed in the third act isn’t a twist at all, and is simply a clarification of what makes this film so tragic and so special in Scorsese’s filmography.

Naturally, there are spoilers ahead.

Movies Being Adapted Into TV Shows

TV companies are going crazy trying to mine film libraries for the next big television series, because why come up with an original untested idea without an established brand name title, right? I almost included the movie to television series trend in my 9 Current Movie and Television Trends I Hate article last month, but I decided it was too soon to make that judgement.

While I’m already tired of seeing the announcements, I really loved Fargo (and I really mean LOVED — it’s my favorite television series of the year), I’m still enjoying Friday Night Lights/Parenthood showrunner Jason Katims‘ About a Boy, and I know many people who really dig Hannibal, Bates Motel, and From Dusk till Dawn: The Series. So it’s hard for me to condemn it at this point.  And yes there are also GothamConstantine and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I consider those shows comic book adaptations.

You might be shocked to learn that there are currently over 30 television shows in development right now based on big screen movies. Which are good ideas? Which sound horrible? After the jump, I attempt to rank all of the movies being adapted into TV shows, by concept from worst to most promising ideas.

Shutter Island

Martin Scorsese‘s current HBO series, Boardwalk Empire, is coming to a close soon, and he is now finishing the pilot for a show set in the decadent music scene of ’70s New York, but another plan is coming together to pair the filmmaker and cable network. Ashecliffe is the working title of a Shutter Island TV series that features a pilot script from Dennis Lehane, the author whose novel inspired Scorsese’s original film.

The 10 Most Beautiful Films of 2010

I hope everyone here had a happy holiday break! I had the chance to finally sit back, relax aimlessly for a few days, and take in some Netflix Watch Instantly films that I wouldn’t get to during the normal course of events. One such film was Sweetgrass, which guest Matt Singer discussed on a previous episode of the /Filmcast. As I watched, I was struck with the film’s breathtaking beauty, and I realized that there’ve been some great-looking films this past year.

Here are what I consider to be the 10 most beautiful films of 2010. There’s no grand unifying theory to this list, other than that these are movies I personally really enjoyed looking at for one reason or another. They are presented in no particular order.

Oh, and tune in on Tuesday night at 9 PM EST at slashfilm’s live page to hear us countdown our top 10 films of 2010!
