Snowpiercer TV series trailer

It’s taken several years for the TV adaptation of Snowpiercer to reach the air. TBS finally showed the trailer at Comic-Con, so now we know what the show looks like. In a frozen future, the last human survivors are protected in a speeding train where all cars are not created equal. Daveed Diggs plays a father in the ghetto of the rear of the train, with Jennifer Connelly speaking for the 1% up front. 

TBS, TNT and TruTV president and WarnerMedia Head of Content Kevin Reilly was at WarnerMedia’s party for the Television Critics Association. Reilly spoke with /Film about how faithful the show is to the movie, why the original pilot had to be redone, and what new surprises the show can reveal. Snowpiercer premieres in 2020.

Like the post-apocalyptic train on which its story is set, Snowpiercer has experienced a bit of a bumpy ride on its way to the small screen. Development on a television adaptation of Bong Joon-ho‘s 2014 sci-fi film – which itself was an adaptation of the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige – first began back in 2015, but soon careened off track by losing both its showrunner and the director of its pilot. One year ago, TNT ordered a series based on Snowpiercer, the French comic that was adapted into a movie by director Bong Joon-ho. Doctor Strange filmmaker Scott Derrickson directed the pilot and Avatar 2 writer Josh Friedman signed on to run the show, but just weeks later, both Derrickson and Friedman were outOrphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson is now running Snowpiercer.

TNT’s adaptation of Snowpiercer is barreling toward the small screen, and now it’s found a new director to keep it on the rails.

Just a few days after original director Scott Derrickson turned down his option to direct extensive reshoots for the show’s pilot episode, the network has hired a new Snowpiercer director: James Hawes, a British filmmaker known for directing episodes of Doctor Who, Penny Dreadful, and more.

Snowpiercer TV series

The director of TNT’s Snowpiercer TV series pilot has stepped off the train.

Doctor Strange and Sinister director Scott Derrickson was hired over a year ago to helm the cable adaptation of the French graphic novel that was famously brought to the big screen by Bong Joon-ho back in 2013. A new showrunner has since come aboard and wants “extreme reshoots” on the pilot, but Derrickson recently took to Twitter to explain that he won’t be the one to oversee them.
