Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again And The Netflix Show Have One Tragic Thing In Common

It's the end of another era for the Man Without Fear. "Daredevil: Born Again" has been canceled by Marvel ahead of Season 3, which recently wrapped filming. It brings a series that was initially met with a great deal of enthusiasm by fans, yet was beset with issues during production, to a somewhat unceremonious end. Regardless of how the third and now final season turns out, it's the beginning of the end.

In some ways, this cancellation mirrors what happened to Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock during his first go around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In case you had forgotten, Netflix's "Daredevil" was also canceled after three seasons in 2018. As such, both shows have now gotten the axe at identical points in their runs.

When Netflix's "Daredevil" was canceled, it truly felt like the end of an era. Netflix's "The Defenders" had lasted just one season, while "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," "Iron Fist," and "The Punisher" were soon after canceled by the streamer as well. And for a long time, Marvel Studios was non-committal in regards to whether or not those shows were even canon in the MCU. However, that finally began to change with "Hawkeye" Episode 5 on Disney+.

Sure enough, when "Daredevil: Born Again" was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, it was the full circle moment many fans had been waiting for. Cox's Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin were truly beloved characters, along with much of the supporting cast. Having them brought into the MCU fold in a meaningful way felt like vindication for fans who loved Netflix's shows. 

But all good things must come to an end ... and for both "Daredevil" series, that end came after three seasons. The question now is: Can "Born Again" go out on a satisfying note?

The "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2 finale set up Season 3. Without getting into spoilers, let's just say that some more familiar faces will be showing up. That could/should make the final season feel big enough and worthy enough of a series finale rather than unceremonious.

On the flip side, Netflix's "Daredevil" had plans for Season 4 and Season 5 before it was canceled. That's not to say that the people behind the current series didn't have ideas of where things could go, but it does feel like they saved the big thing for last and since they know the show is ending, they can ensure that they don't leave fans with a cliffhanger. Whether or not that's consolation to fans who wanted to see the show continue is another question entirely.

Both cancellations were very much the result of behind the scenes changes at Marvel Studios. When Netflix canceled "Daredevil," it was just as Disney and Marvel Studios were looking to take more active control of the TV side of things. In the here and now, Marvel Studios is clearly going to be producing fewer live-action TV shows for Disney+, focusing on a "less is more" approach in the future. "Born Again" is seemingly a casualty of that.

It's also important to note that "Born Again" Season 2 suffered a major viewership drop on Disney+. So, the cancellation isn't without its merits from a business perspective. As for the future? It's certainly possible that Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock could make the jump to the big screen, but anything at this stage would be nothing more than speculation. We'll see what the future holds.
