Daredevil: Born Again Canceled By Marvel Ahead Of Season 3

It's the beginning of the end for "Daredevil: Born Again." The third season of the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe series recently finished filming for release on Disney+, but don't expect to see Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk back for more beyond that. Ahead of the Season 3 premiere, Disney and Marvel Studios have decided to cancel the show.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 3 will be its last. As the report notes, Marvel quietly parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane in the midst of post-production, making it unclear who is steering the ship for the time being. Marvel Studios had to revamp "Born Again" with new writers and directors during its first season. It was a messy road to release, and this is a fittingly messy end for a show that endured a rough road.

Without getting into spoilers, the "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2 finale set up Season 3. Some familiar faces will be returning, making it seem like a big enough deal for what is now going to have to serve as a series finale. With any luck, knowing this far in advance means that the brass at the studio can conclude the show without any frustrating cliffhangers or anything like that — although, with production wrapped, it remains to be seen if any retooling may be required to put a final punctuation mark on the series. For fans, even a concrete ending will only ease the sting so much.

The series stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, who is at odds with Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin. The show served as a revival of sorts of the Netflix "Daredevil" show, which was also canceled after three seasons. Netflix did have plans for "Daredevil" Season 4 and 5, but those plans never came to fruition.

At the time, Netflix canceling the show had more to do with a shift in strategy both at Marvel and the streamer. Shows like "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," "Iron Fist," and "The Punisher" were also canceled. However, "Born Again" was able to make those shows part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon, bringing back the same actors to reprise their roles. Jon Bernthal returned as Punisher in "Punisher: One Last Kill," which fixed the Netflix show's biggest issue, as well as "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."

The big question now is whether or not Marvel Studios will do anything else with Charlie Cox's Daredevil, or any of these other characters for that matter. A "Daredevil" movie, perhaps? Or will Cox truly move on once the Multiverse Saga ends with "Avengers: Secret Wars" next year? For now, we have more questions than answers.

What we know for sure is that this certainly seems to be another victim of the ever-evolving Marvel Studios strategy. "Wonder Man" was also canceled despite being initially renewed for Season 2. Disney and Marvel seemingly want to invest fewer resources into live-action Marvel TV shows on Disney+ in the future.

As of right now, the only other confirmed live-action MCU show coming out is "VisionQuest," which is being billed as the finale of the "WandaVision" trilogy. So that too is unlikely to have any sort of continuation beyond a single season.
