Tom Bateman and Lili Reinhart lead Prime Video's latest romantic comedy "The Love Hypothesis," and many will surely be wondering where these two unreasonably attractive people came from. Well, in Reinhart's case, she's been working since the early 2010s and is best known for playing Betty Cooper in The CW's "Riverdale." But there's much more to her career.

It's been an unusual journey for "The Love Hypothesis." The film is an adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's 2021 novel of the same name, which stayed on the New York Times Best Seller list for many, many months upon its initial release. What many fans might not know, however, is that this "STEMinist" romance story (i.e. tales of love blossoming among those in STEM careers) actually started as "Star Wars" fan fiction about a love affair between the characters Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). And since Bateman happens to be Ridley's real-life husband, the new Prime Video movie has "Star Wars" fans spiraling.

Hazelwood ultimately reworked her story into a novel about a Ph.D. candidate and a professor faking a relationship that quickly becomes real. Now, Prime Video has brought "The Love Hypothesis" to streaming audiences everywhere. The film stars Bateman and Reinhart as the the professor and student in question, and viewers will likely want to know more about the pair — especially given how well these romance movies have fared in the past. (The streamer's romantic drama "The Map That Leads to You," which starred Reinhart's "Riverdale" co-star KJ Apa, topped the Prime Video charts upon its 2025 release). Lili Reinhart made her screen debut in the 2010 short "For Today" before appearing on the TV show "Scientastic!" A more high-profile guest spot came in 2011 when Reinhart appeared in an episode of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" — a rite of passage for any up-and-comer. That same year, she made her feature film debut in "Lilith," playing the eponymous murder victim. More film roles followed, with Reinhart working alongside Nick Offerman in 2013's "The Kings of Summer," Timothée Chalamet in "Miss Stevens," and James Caan in "The Good Neighbor," both of which were released in 2016.

That year turned out to be a big one for the then-20-year-old actor in other ways as well, as she was additionally cast to play Betty Cooper in The CW's Archie Comics TV show "Riverdale." Archie's (KJ Apa) best friend and, for a while, Jughead Jones' (Cole Sprouse) girlfriend, Betty eventually became an FBI agent after graduating from college, among other absolutely wild plot developments. It was Reinhart's breakout role.

"Riverdale" came to a suitably weird end in 2023 after six seasons and introduced the actor to a whole new generation of fans. Indeed, while working on the show, Reinhart built upon her newfound fame, appearing in movies like Lorene Scafaria's "Hustlers," in which she played the dancer and sex worker Annabelle alongside stars Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez. She also starred in her first Prime Video romance film outing "Chemical Hearts," which was itself, like "The Love Hypothesis," based on a book: Krystal Sutherland's "Our Chemical Hearts."

Lili Reinhart has continued to work consistently in film and TV throughout the 2020s. She guest-starred on a 2020 episode of "The Simpsons" and fronted the 2022 Netflix romantic dramedy "Look Both Ways." That movie saw her play a college graduate whose life diverges into two separate timelines, one of which featured David Corenswet, the then-future star of James Gunn's charming crowd-pleaser "Superman."

Around the same time, Deadline reported that Reinhart's production company Small Victory Productions had signed a first look deal with Amazon Studios. The company's first feature (per a post from its official Instagram account) was 2025's "American Sweatshop," in which Reinhart stars as a social media content moderator. The film received a 77% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers praising Reinhart's performance. 2025 also saw her star in the miniseries "Hal & Harper" which debuted on MUBI in the United States.

Her last role prior to "The Love Hypothesis" was in Shudder's horror comedy movie and potential (likely?) future cult classic "Forbidden Fruits." Up next, she's set to appear in the thriller film "The Mannequin" and will join Paul Walter Hauser, Tim Roth, and Jai Courtney in the comedy thriller flick "The Very Best People." Meanwhile, outside of acting, Reinhart has released a book of poetry titled "Swimming Lessons: Poems."
