Snowpiercer director

TNT’s adaptation of Snowpiercer is barreling toward the small screen, and now it’s found a new director to keep it on the rails.

Just a few days after original director Scott Derrickson turned down his option to direct extensive reshoots for the show’s pilot episode, the network has hired a new Snowpiercer director: James Hawes, a British filmmaker known for directing episodes of Doctor Who, Penny Dreadful, and more.

i am the night trailer

Update: TNT has announced that I Am the Night will be released as part of TNT’s newly minted TNT Suspense Collection. It will follow The Alienist in TNT’s slate of thriller-themed limited series.

Patty Jenkins has found a wonderful collaborator in Chris Pinethe star of the Wonder Woman director’s new noir-tinged TNT series. Pine stars in I Am the Night, a limited TNT series that was originally titled One Day She’ll Darken, after Fauna Hodel’s autobiography of the same name.

But while the original title is gone, the talent is still there, as Pine steals the show as the intrepid hack journalist investigating a young girl’s dark and dangerous lineage.

Snowpiercer TV series

The director of TNT’s Snowpiercer TV series pilot has stepped off the train.

Doctor Strange and Sinister director Scott Derrickson was hired over a year ago to helm the cable adaptation of the French graphic novel that was famously brought to the big screen by Bong Joon-ho back in 2013. A new showrunner has since come aboard and wants “extreme reshoots” on the pilot, but Derrickson recently took to Twitter to explain that he won’t be the one to oversee them.

tales from the crypt reboot

Tales From the Crypt‘s resurrection from the dead, helmed by horror connoisseur M. Night Shyamalan, has been cut short.

TNT’s planned reboot of the horror-camp anthology series that ran from 1989 to 1996 had a 10-episode order with Shyamalan on board to curate short and long-form horror stories, and a new Cryptkeeper planned to host. But TNT president Kevin Reilly revealed that Tales From the Crypt, and the weekly two-hour horror block the network had planned around it, had to be axed because of rights issues.

Snowpiercer header

For me, TNT has always been the channel I turn to when nothing else is on and I’m looking for a familiar film to serve as background noise. I mean, how many times can one network possibly air The Shawshank Redemption? My guess is they’ve set the record, and second place isn’t even close.

The network has had its share of original TV content over the past couple of decades – I guess someone has to keep Noah Wylie employed – but it looks like I’m going to have to brush off my preconceived notions about that channel, because they’re apparently stepping up their game. They’ve hired Avatar 4 writer Josh Friedman to be the showrunner for a TV adaptation of Snowpiercer, and now two more big names have boarded the train: Tony Award-winning Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs will star, and Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson will direct the show’s pilot.

Tales from the Crypt Crypt Keeper

Just a couple days ago, TNT announced that they were creating a new block of horror programming that would be anchored by a reboot of the horror anthology series Tales from the Crypt. The adaptation of the comic book of the same name was originally on HBO, but now it’s being taken to more tame cable with the help of M. Night Shyamalan. Many fans were wondering just how much of the original TV adaptation would be revamped for the reboot, and it sounds like one signature part of the show will be changed.

Fans of Tales from the Crypt will remember that each episode was introduced and closed by the Crypt Keeper, a talking skeleton voiced by John Kassir with an arsenal of puns and a wicked cackle to follow them. At the time the show was announced, TNT executives said they were saving an announcement about the Crypt Keeper for another time. But someone else has beat them to the punch with the details, and you might not like what they have to say.

UPDATE: M. Night Shyamalan has also chimed in on the matter of the Crypt Keeper below.
