The breakfast Club Criterion Blu-ray

(Welcome to Not Dead Yet, a feature dedicated to what’s new on Blu-ray and what special features you should be excited about. Because yes, some of us still like to own physical copies of our movies.)

Happy New Year! 2018 is just getting started – there’s going to be a whole slew of exciting new Blu-ray titles to hit shelves this year. But first, here are some so-so films!

What we mostly have here are what I’d like to think of as holiday leftovers – films that weren’t big enough to hit stores as part of the holiday shopping rush. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing of value here. In fact, there are some surprisingly good titles, including a Jackie Chan movie that rises above its premise, a Watergate-based drama, a survivalist film where Kate Winslet and Idris Elba crash a plane and then get sexy, and more. There’s also a surprisingly controversial new release from The Criterion Collection. Here are the new Blu-ray releases you should check out this week.

Idris Elba - Fan Fiction - Morning Watch

(The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.)

Plus, Jim Carrey sat down for a nearly 30-minute conversation about comedy, characters and existence at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Adult Swim released the full version of the “Fathers and Daughters” song from this past weekend’s Rick and Morty. the mountain between us trailer

Despite a vague title that sounds somewhat like a romantic-comedy, Kate Winslet and Idris Elba aren’t here to romance each other in The Mountain Between Us (though I would watch that rom-com).

The two of them play strangers whose plane crashes on a desolate Colorado mountaintop and must fight to survive against the freezing elements, wild animals, and their own attraction to each other — it was inevitable, they are the most beautiful people in the world — in the recently released official trailer.

The Mountain Between Us header

Two of England’s best acting exports are joining forces for a survival romance about two people who escape the wreckage of a plane crash. Idris Elba and Kate Winslet star in The Mountain Between Us as a surgeon and photojournalist, respectively, who are injured in a crash and must rely on each other to survive in the freezing Colorado mountains. Naturally, they fall in love in the process. I mean, have you seen those two? They’re two of the hottest people on the planet. Of course they fall for each other.

USA Today has our first look at some photos from the movie, as well as some quotes from the director that make me think this is the beginning of a Revenant-style campaign to make sure everyone knows how tough it was to shoot out in the elements.
