2022 SXSW Releases Line-Up — 5 Movies We're Looking Forward To Most

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festival is back in-person, in addition to select films being made available online. The fest runs from March 11-20, 2022 and includes 99 features, 111 short films, 11 episodic premieres, 6 episodic pilots, 29 XR experience projects, and 19 title design competition entries. Every film will premiere in-person, and films that have opted-in for online screenings for badgeholders will be subject to geoblocking and capacity limits at rightsholder, filmmaker, or distributor discretion. Although SXSW is a global festival, the online availability will restrict most films to the United States, but the SXSW TV app will be available through Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, and Android TV.

Feature Highlights include the opening night screening of "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and the third season of FX's "Atlanta." Other draws include "Bodies, Bodies, Bodies," "Lost City of D," the Nicolas Cage playing Nicolas Cage film "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," "Richard Linklater's "Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood," Jeff Baena's "Spin Me Round," Gillian Jacobs' "More Than Robots," the documentary "Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down," the return of Ti West with "X," and episodic highlights like Ava DuVernay's "DMZ," Ethan Hawke's "The Last Movie Stars," the "Halo" show, and the Untitled Magic Johnson Documentary Series directed by Rick Famuyiwa.

Here's five films we're looking forward to checking out.

Bodies, Bodies, Bodies

Thanks to films like "Scream," "The Fear Street Trilogy," "There's Someone Inside Your House," and the remake of "Slumber Party Massacre," we're currently living in a resurgence of slasher films, and I can't get enough. In a new film from A24, Halina Reijn presents "Bodies, Bodies, Bodies," set to have its world premiere at SXSW. The film stars Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Pete Davidson, Myha'la Herrold, Rachel Sennott, Case Sui Wonders, Conner O'Malley, and Lee Pace, the film centers on a group of 20-somethings during a hurricane party at a remote family mansion when a party game turns deadly. A24 has been calling this a "secret slasher film," and while many of us assumed it would be a horror comedy after Pete Davidson joined the cast, SXSW has confirmed this with the description referring to the film as a "fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends, and one party gone very, very wrong."

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

I'm sorry, but how are any of us able to focus on anything else at the festival when we know that the movie featuring Nicolas Cage playing Nicolas Cage playing roles made famous by Nicolas Cage because Pedro Pascal told him to is having its premiere? Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself having to reckon with his career choices after getting caught up in a plot involving the CIA and a drug cartel kingpin, who has hired him to appear at his birthday party playing some of his most famous movie characters. To make things even more intense, Cage learns of his cartel status from the CIA, who recruits him to get intelligence for the U.S. government. Unfortunately for him, the kingpin also wrangles Cage's daughter and ex-wife (characters in the film, not anyone from Cage's real life) into the picture, putting him in the most dangerous position of his life. I need it, I need it immediately.

The Prank

Maureen Bharoocha's debut feature film "Golden Arm," the Betsy Sodaro and Mary Holland starring indie underdog story set in the world of women's competitive arm wrestling, was one of my favorite films of 2020, and I have been desperately waiting for Bharoocha's sophomore film. Premiering at SXSW is "The Prank," a movie about Ben and his slacker friend Tanner who decide to play a prank on their high school physics teacher (Rita Moreno) after she fails them on a test. Rather than egg her house or hide a whoopee cushion under her chair, the boys' brand of "prank" is falsely accusing the teacher on social media of murdering one of their missing classmates. Bharoocha is one of the most exciting emerging talents, but reading the cast list of Connor Kalopsis, Ramona Young, Keith David, Kate Flannery, Meredith Salenger, Johnathan Kimmel, Nathan Janak, Betsy Sodaro, and Romel De Silva joining Moreno more than sealed the deal.

Kids In The Hall: Comedy Punks

The Canadian sketch comedy series "Kids in the Hall" was one of the definitive comedy shows of the 1990s, making cult heroes of Dave Foley, Scott Thompson, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Bruce McCulloch. They portray the vast majority of the characters in the series and wrote most of the sketches. Director Reginald Harkema ("Super Duper Alice Cooper," "Better Off in Bed") utilizes never before seen archival footage, interviews with celebrities, industry insiders, the titular Kids in the Hall themselves, and some of the biggest fans to tell the story of a rag-tag group of Canadian weirdos who became one of the most influential comedy troupes in history.

X

I've been a die-hard fan of Ti West since I first caught "House of the Devil" in 2009, but it's been six years since we've seen a feature film from the king of 2010s slow-burn horror. Well, his comeback looks to be one with a vengeance, and I cannot contain my excitement. Joining forces with A24, "X" is set in 1979 and focuses on a group of young filmmakers looking to make an adult film in rural Texas. But after their reclusive, elderly hosts catch wind of what kind of movie they're trying to make, the cast and crew are forced to fight for their lives. Period piece? Check. Porn set? Check. Ridiculously talented cast of Mia Goth, Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, and Scott Mescudi? BIG ASS CHECK! If you need me, I'm already waiting in line.
