Crystal Lake Finally Answers A Huge Jason Voorhees Question From Friday The 13th
This article contains major spoilers for "Crystal Lake" Season 1.
The "Friday the 13th" franchise has finally made its long-awaited return. While we did get the official short "Sweet Revenge" in 2025 (which saw a new actor playing horror icon Jason Voorhees for the first time in more than 15 years), that wasn't nearly as significant as what we've got now. "Crystal Lake" Season 1 has arrived on Peacock, with the prequel series answering a great many questions about the franchise during its eight-episode run. This includes addressing a query that has been left dangling for more than 40 years.
"Crystal Lake" gives us a bloody Jason Voorhees origin story that centers on Pam Voorhees (Linda Cardellini), a single mother who is grieving after her young son Jason drowned at Camp Crystal Lake. When strangers arrive at her door one day, it sets off a disturbing chain of events that ultimately peel back the curtain on the long-running horror property. The show takes place primarily in 1972, eight years before the events of the very first "Friday the 13th" movie. But we do get flashbacks to the late '50s/early '60s, which is where a big mystery is finally resolved — namely, who Jason's father is.
Jason's dad is a man by the name of Elias, as played by Hamish Linklater. Viewers may recognize the actor from his turn as the villain Cipher on "Gen V" or his work on Mike Flanagan's "Midnight Mass" series. Here, he plays a man working for the Bell Flower corporation, a mysterious organization that helps Pam deliver Jason despite complications during her pregnancy.
Yet, for all we learn about him during the course of the show's first season, Elias is still something of an enigma by the time the credits roll on the season finale.
Who is Jason Voorhees' dad in Crystal Lake?
Season 1's penultimate episode is where we truly come to understand the nature of Elias and Pam's relationship. They are hesitant to explain how they met to others and what their relationship even is. They're not married when Pam is pregnant, and they seem resistant to labels. But once they move to the Bell Flower campus to ensure Jason can be born without complications, they get married and have a happy life, on the surface.
Elias is promoted repeatedly at Bell Flower as time goes on. He becomes entrenched in the company's mysterious experiments. Jason, who was born with several disorders, is at the center of many of those experiments, which Pam is in the dark about. Ultimately, the "Crystal Lake" origin twist for Jason Voorhees will leave many "Friday the 13th" fans furious, as we discover that Elias was using his son as an experiment to see if humans can survive nuclear war by infusing him with cockroach DNA. Yes, really. S*** gets weird.
In any event, Pam takes Jason and runs away to the town of Crystal Lake with a new identity, working at the camp. That explains why we never hear anything about Jason's dad, as they were in hiding. Beyond that, Jason kills Elias in Season 1's final episode, along with his corporate goons. So, there wasn't anyone left to go looking for Pam and/or Jason by the time credits rolled.
The original "Friday the 13th" is one of the best '80s horror movies, establishing that Pam loves Jason unconditionally, enough to kill on his behalf. The later films established that Jason loved Pam just as much, so the fact that Elias was so terrible to him helps explain why he loved his mother much, much more.
How the reveal of Jason's dad changes Friday the 13th lore
It's not that Pam was a peach, either. She let Jason drown not once but twice. In any case, she cared enough to look for him and to kill those whom she deemed irresponsible. That's more than can be said for Elias, who used Jason for the sick and twisted experiments his company intended to use for profit.
Jason Voorhees is arguably the greatest slasher movie villain of them all, but "Friday the 13th" lore had never been terribly complicated. Movies like "The New Blood" get pretty wild, introducing superpowers and other such nonsense, sure, but the films are more about jumping the shark more than they are about building an elaborate larger mythology. Now, Elias has not only changed things, he's also made the franchise's mythos that much more complex.
For better or worse, "Crystal Lake" Season 1 is a mystery box that answers big questions about "Friday the 13th," whether we had them or not. The identity of Jason's dad, however, was a question many fans have had for a long, long time. Now, the explanation of who Jason's father is has taken us down a twisty, strange rabbit hole that changes our understanding of who Jason is, why he is the way that he is, and why his mother was the way that she was.
This show is considered canon so it's going to color the "Friday the 13th" movies in a new light. There is a lot more context for how these relatively simple slasher films unfold. There's more underneath it all, and that goes back to Elias.
"Crystal Lake" is streaming now on Peacock.
