The Best TV Shows And Movies Coming To Netflix In April 2024

While "Dune: Part Two" continues to dominate the box office, Netflix is bringing a whole lot of new titles to the platform — and we're doing our best to make sure that not all of them get lost in the algorithm.

This April, Netflix is bringing some highly anticipated titles, including what was once meant to be a spin-off of "Doom Patrol" (the best superhero show that isn't a superhero show), a brand new anime from the studio behind "Ranking of Kings," and not one but two live-action adaptations of beloved manga — including one created by the director of "Train to Busan."

Because of the almighty algorithm, it can be hard to filter through the many titles getting released on streaming every week, let alone know they even exist. That's what this guide is for, as we go through our top picks for what we're hoping are some of the coolest TV and movies to arrive on Netflix in April, plus everything else dropping on the service next month.

Dead Boy Detectives

"Dead Boy Detectives" was originally intended to be a spin-off of the aforementioned "Doom Patrol," with the characters even appearing in a season 3 episode, played by Ty Tennant and Sebastian Croft. Now, those characters are recast and the show is set to be a part of the same universe as Netflix's own "The Sandman."

"Dead Boy Detectives" follows two teenage boys, Charles (now played by Jayden Revri) and Edwin (now played by George Rexstrew). They are, well, dead, and they solve crimes. The first trailer focused on the action and thrill of the overarching fight between the titular boys and some unnatural force that's after them.

Hopefully, the show will still have some actual detecting and mystery. The show also stars Kassius Nelson as the teenage psychic Crystal Palace, and Yuyu Kitamura as Niko Sasaki, Crystal's friend and an ally of the detectives thanks to her knowledge of "Scooby-Doo."

The Grimm Variations

There are three big reasons to be excited for "The Grimm Variations." The first is the fact that this is an anime anthology inspired by Brothers Grimm folk tales. Seeing those stories, including the weirdness and darkness missing from American (read: Disney) animated adaptations, mixed with the possibilities of the anime medium is intriguing.

Then there's the fact that manga creator group CLAMP is in charge of designs for the anime. CLAMP is an all-female Japanese artist group best known creating "X," "xxxHolic," and the hugely popular and influential "Cardcaptor Sakura" franchise. The group has a unique visual style, and their designs alone can vastly improve on other shows, like how "Code Geass" becomes a thrilling action show and also a teenage drama thanks to CLAMP's designs making the characters look innocent despite the atrocities they commit.

Lastly, there's WIT Studio, the company in charge of animation production. The studio is known for the first three seasons of "Attack on Titan," and more recently the excellent "Ranking of Kings," which takes a fantasy story and gives it a dark fairy tale look that's dazzling and original. Given that Netflix's synopsis for "The Grimm Variations" says that the anthology features "fairy tales with a dark twist, exposing the shadowy side of human desire," it seems WIT Studio is the right team to be handling this.

Parasyte: The Grey

While we wait for Sony's Spider-Man Universe to reveal the third outing for Venom, Netflix is about to unleash its own TV show about a man who finds himself sharing a body with a symbiotic alien parasite. "Parasyte: The Grey" is based on the manga "Parasyte" by Hitoshi Iwaaki, which follows a high-schooler whose body is infiltrated by an alien parasite. Unfortunately for the parasite, it only manages to take control of the boy's arm rather than his whole body. Now sharing a body, the two form a symbiotic relationship, and they go on to fight other parasite-infested people.

"Parasyte: The Grey" is a Korean live-action adaptation of the manga, helmed by "Train to Busan" director Yeon Sang-ho, who also directed the thrilling Netflix show "Hellbound." Given Yeon's ability to use genre and VFX to tell thrilling and big-scale stories even within the TV format, "Parasyte: The Grey" is posed to be the next great manga adaptation.

City Hunter

"City Hunter" is back, and this time he leaves behind the 1980s for modern-day Shinjuku. The original "City Hunter" manga and anime are about as '80s as you get: It's a hardboiled detective story that's also a neon-lit buddy cop comedy. The protagonist is Ryo Saeba, a "sweeper" and private detective with big shoulder pads who is also a notorious flirt — and always gets punched in the head with a giant hammer by his new partner Makimura, whom Ryo is constantly flirting with.

The new movie stars Ryohei Suzuki as Ryo, and Misato Morita as his partner Makimura. The action moves to modern-day Shinjuku, where Ryo tries to avenge his dead partner and ends up facing a whole world of trouble. Tatsuhiro Mishima, who wrote the live-action "Yu Yu Hakusho" remake, is penning the script while Yuichi Sato ("Kisaragi") is directing "City Hunter" for Netflix.

One Piece Film: Red

The latest blockbuster film in the "One Piece" universe is coming to Netflix. "One Piece Film: Red" is one of the best "One Piece" movies, and the 15th film in the series, based on the iconic manga by Eiichiro Oda. The film follows Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats as they go to an island of music to see the first-ever live concert by Uta, the world's greatest music star. While fans, pirates, and marines from across the world are there to enjoy Uta's voice, things start going south the moment she reveals herself to be the daughter of Red-Haired Shanks.

What makes this unique as a shonen anime movie is that "One Piece Film: Red" is a proper musical full of J-pop tunes. The songs are catchy, and fit nicely into the plot. And, of course, there's enough of Shanks to satisfy longtime fans of the manga, including a huge reveal about his backstory and even the first look at Luffy's Gear 5 in animation. Unsurprisingly, the movie was a big hit, and it quickly became one of the highest-grossing films ever in Japan.
