1923: Release Date, Cast And More For The Latest Yellowstone Spin-Off Series

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

When you think of Paramount TV shows, you probably think of Taylor Sheridan. At this point, the man behind "Yellowstone," "1883," and "Mayor of Kingstown" is the creative architect behind some of the biggest hits on television. He also shows no signs of slowing down. "Yellowstone" may be the crowning jewel of the Paramount Network's original programming, but Sheridan is expanding his narrative reach in several directions with upcoming shows including "Tulsa King," "Land Man," "Lioness," and "1883: The Bass Reeves Story."

One of the most highly-anticipated titles in Sheridan's ever-growing stable of shows, though, is "1923." The second "Yellowstone" spin-off set to explore a bygone era in Dutton family history, and includes a cast that's perhaps even more star-studded than any "Yellowstone" show to date. Here's everything we know so far about "1923."

1923 season 1 release date and where you can watch it

While flagship series "Yellowstone" calls the Paramount Network its home, spin-off "1883" was a Paramount+ exclusive instead, and "1923" will follow in that series' footsteps with a streaming release. According to Deadline, the show will debut on Sunday, December 18, 2022 on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada, while the U.K. and Australia will get it the next day. Both of the other shows in the franchise have had weekly episode drops, so it's likely "1923" will follow the same pattern, meaning its 8-episode first season will probably wrap up around February.

If you're a fan of Sheridan's works, subscribing to Paramount+ is a no-brainer. Several of his future projects will be Paramount+ exclusives, and it's already the streaming home for "1883." The streamer is also on the more affordable side, with plans starting at $4.99 a month and a one-week free trial option. Plus, the platform has some deal going right now, including a discount on billing if you pay annually instead of monthly, and a bundle option with Showtime for $11.99 a month.

What is 1923 about?

"1923" will continue the story of the Dutton family, who we've already seen squabble over their land and power within their family in "Yellowstone," and whose ancestors we saw journey westward in "1883." Now, 40 years after James and Margaret Dutton made it to Paradise Valley, a new generation of Duttons is carving out a life for themselves that's anything but paradise. The series is set to tackle real-life problems that faced Americans during this era, including the tail end of the Prohibition movement, the looming presence of the Great Depression, and a rise in cattle theft.

It'll also include some historical plot points that mirror our own time, including the presence of a pandemic (official synopses don't say which, but the Spanish Flu began in 1918) and an historic drought. It sounds like the show may go beyond the parameters of its title year, as Variety reports that it will feature the end of World War I in 1918. While most plot details are still under wraps, casting announcements reported by Deadline show that the series will center on Cara (Helen Mirren) and Jacob (Harrison Ford) Dutton, and will also feature a Native American residential boarding school as well as a ranch setting. Interestingly, one other thing we do know for sure is that the show started out titled "1932," but was moved back roughly a decade, a move that could leave room for another spin-off later on.

The cast and crew of 1923

When it comes to pitching "1923" to viewers who may not have been on board with the franchise before, the biggest immediate draw is its stellar cast. Legendary actor Harrison Ford will be appearing in what's poised to be his first multi-episode TV arc since 1972's "Gunsmoke," while Oscar-winner Dame Helen Mirren will co-star in a different sort of period piece than the kind we're used to seeing her in. James Bond actor Timothy Dalton will reportedly appear as well, along with Tony and BAFTA winner Jennifer Ehle and talented character actor Robert Patrick.

The show's supporting cast also includes James Badge Dale ("24"), Jerome Flynn ("Game of Thrones"), Darren Mann ("Animal Kingdom"), Marley Shelton ("Rise"), Sebastian Roché ("Big Sky"), Michelle Randolph ("The Resort"), Brian Geraghty ("Chicago P.D."), Aminah Nieves ("V/H/S/99"), Julia Schlaepfer ("The Politician"), and Brandon Sklenar ("Mapplethorpe").

Sheridan created the series and serves as executive producer. John Linson, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and Ben Richardson, all of whom worked on "Yellowstone," round out the team of executiv producers along with "1883" EP Ron Burkle.

The official synopsis for "1923" is as follows:

"The next Yellowstone origin story will introduce a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west and the Duttons who call it home."
