luke skywalker lightsaber

Audiences got a first glimpse of the rare yellow lightsaber on the big screen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, when Rey revealed her own personal lightsaber at the end of the film, emitting a golden-yellow hue. It was a stark contrast to the blue and green lightsabers that Jedi Masters had wielded in the past, or the red lightsabers of the Sith.

But a new Star Wars comic has revealed that this isn’t the first time a major Jedi Master has wielded a yellow lightsaber. Luke Skywalker, who until now had only been seen wielding the blue lightsaber passed down by Anakin or the green lightsaber he constructed himself, has been revealed to have wielded a secret yellow lightsaber.

force awakens luke skywalker

Luke Skywalker remained out of sight, but never out of mind, through much of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Then he appeared as a bearded Mark Hamill in the final few seconds of the film. But we almost saw a glimpse of Luke earlier in the film, through the tumultuous vision that Rey receives when she picks up Luke’s long lost lightsaber. The twist: he wouldn’t have been played by Hamill but by actor Robert Boulter, in a re-enactment of the famous The Empire Strikes Back duel.

And now, we know what he would’ve looked like.

luke skywalker's last words

Marvel’s comic book adaptation of Star Wars: The Last Jedi fleshes out Rian Johnson‘s acclaimed film, inserting tiny gems that make Episode 8 feel all the richer. And while The Last Jedi provided us with the perfect ending to Luke’s (Mark Hamill) journey, the Star Wars: The Last Jedi comic book throws a cherry on top with its insight to Luke Skywalker’s last words.

luke snoke connection

Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) cut an ominous figure in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Scarred and disfigured, this character had managed to rise to power and amass a tyrannical army in the span of 30 years. That’s astonishing, even in a story as fantastical and far, far away as Star Wars. In the two years between Episode 7 and Episode 8, Snoke spawned countless theories and Reddit threads about who, exactly, he was.

So when fans sat down for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, they expected to see more of this tantalizing villain and his backstory. Unfortunately, that didn’t quite happen. But the official novelization of Last Jedi may explain a little more about who Snoke is. And it may connect to our first Star Wars hero, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

luke skywalker rogue one

When Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) delivered the fatal blow into the thermal exhaust port that would detonate the gargantuan Death Star in Star Wars: A New Hope, he was unaware of the lives that had been lost to deliver the plans that led to that assault. We didn’t learn ourselves until 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story delved into the small, scruffy team that nobly gave their lives in honor of a greater cause. The spin-off film took place immediately before the events of A New Hope, but the sacrifice of Jyn Erso and her team was barely mentioned. Now, a Marvel Star Wars comic book fills in those gaps.

Mark Hamill - Star Wars The Last Jedi Disagreement

Movies can change drastically over the course of production. And in a series like Star Wars, where the directors are replaced movie to movie, there will inevitably be some ideas left on the cutting room floor. One of those ideas is the original ending for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Mark Hamill has revealed the original ending for The Force Awakens, which could have changed the entire course of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Last year, the actor revealed that the ending was changed at the last minute, but the nature of what changed has been veiled in mystery. But now, it seems he’s been given the go-ahead to say exactly what that was, or at least, Disney is not watching him as hawkishly anymore.

Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi follow.

Luke Skywalker blind

Luke Skywalker, the hero of the Star Wars movies, changed a lot in the 30 years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. The Luke we saw celebrating the defeat of the Empire on Endor is a far cry from the one we catch up with in the final moments of The Force Awakens – he’s transformed into a silent, bushy-bearded, wounded animal wearing a hooded robe. But the Luke we’re about to see in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi nearly had a more drastic transformation applied to his character: in an early formation of the story, writer/director Rian Johnson was toying with the idea of making Luke Skywalker blind.

luke skywalker jedi temple

Ahch-To may have you thinking back to a certain recurring joke in Mel Brooks’ Robin Hood: Men in Tightsbut the oddly-named planet is crucial to Star Wars lore and the plot of the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

It’s where Jedi Master Luke Skywalker finds himself in self-exile, and where the aspiring Jedi Rey finds Luke at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But The Last Jedi won’t get into the nitty-gritty of how the former Tatooine farmboy ended up in the Ahch-To Jedi Temple — nor will the movie overshare details at all, really — so you’ll have to look to the Star Wars Battlefront II video game to gain insight into this particular journey.
