Josh Hartnett once starred in a darkly comedic neo-noir thriller, and you can stream it for free at this very moment. Co-starring the action legend Bruce Willis as part of an impressive ensemble, "Lucky Number Slevin" didn't get its flowers back in 2006, but it's since garnered a loyal following. /Film editor Ben Pearson even counts it among his favorite movies of all time.

Streaming now on Tubi and Pluto TV, "Lucky Number Slevin" was directed by Paul McGuigan, whom Hartnett had previously worked with on 2004's "Wicker Park." The movie focuses on a case of mistaken identity, which puts a man named Slevin (Hartnett) in the middle of a war between two rival New York crime lords. Under the watchful eyes of Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) and an assassin named Goodkat (Willis), Slevin must devise a plan to save his skin as these forces converge around him.

The movie only made $56 million at the box office against a budget of $27 million, making it, at best, a modest success at the time. Many critics hated "Lucky Number Slevin," but fans have learned to love it, which has helped it endure over the last two decades. It was no doubt aided by the peak DVD era, as well as being in rotation on cable TV for a number of years. That has, in turn, made it a continuing discovery for many viewers in the streaming era. It's why we're talking about it now.

This is a very fine example of the box office not being the end all, be all when it comes to sealing a movie's fate. Though, it is a little harder for a film like this to keep its head above the water in the endless sea of choices across dozens of streaming services these days.

Lucky Number Slevin is a star-studded affair

A big part of what has helped "Lucky Number Slevin" is the fact that it has a downright unbelievable cast. Aside from Josh Hartnett and Bruce Willis, its ensemble includes the likes of Lucy Liu ("Charlie's Angels"), Morgan Freeman ("The Shawshank Redemption"), Ben Kingsley ("Sexy Beast"), Stanley Tucci ("The Devil Wears Prada"), and the late, great Robert Forster ("Jackie Brown").

Hartnett made his acting debut in a long-running horror movie franchise as part of 1998's "Halloween H20." From there, thanks to his roles in the likes of "The Faculty" and "Pearl Harbor," he rapidly moved up Hollywood's A-list. The early 2000s also saw Harnett working on high-profile projects such as "Black Hawk Down" and "Sin City." In more recent years, he's made something of a resurgence, appearing in everything from M. Night Shyamalan's thriller "Trap" to Christopher Nolan's Best Picture Oscar winning "Oppenheimer."

In an interview with with GQ, Hartnett spoke very fondly of "Lucky Number Slevin," calling it one of the best times on set during the course of his career to date:

"It all came together in the course of like, two weeks. And then yeah, we were allowed to go make this movie. It was just a bunch of friends again, a bunch of young people going up to make this film. It was one of the best experiences I ever had on set."

Most recently, Netflix added Hartnett's miniseries about a town terrorized by a sea monster, "Below." In addition, the actor only just starred in Amazon MGM Studios' steamy thriller "Verity," which was a big hit.
