It's Me, Margaret" will soon be available to watch at home. It took over half of a century for someone to adapt Judy Blume's groundbreaking novel of the same name, but Kelly Fremon Craig's adaptation was well worth the wait. The coming-of-age comedy-drama centers on the titular 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) who is thrown into the suburbs of New Jersey after her family moves from New York City. Margaret must deal with puberty, making new friends, and adjusting to her new environment during one of the most tumultuous times of a person's life, tackling the taboos of tweendom every step of the way.
In addition to Fortson, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" boasts a stellar cast including Rachel McAdams ("Mean Girls," "Game Night") as Margaret's mother, Barbara; Benny Safdie ("Licorice Pizza," "Good Time") as her father, Herb; and Kathy Bates ("American Horror Story," "Misery") as her feisty grandmother, Sylvia.
Even if you never grew up as a tween girl in the 1970s or a tween girl at all, Kelly Fremon Craig made sure "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" would be accessible to audiences of all backgrounds. In the same way that Blume's novel was often passed between generations as a rite of passage, so too will the film. Get ready, because there's a new sleepover staple in the cinematic neighborhood. We've said before that Lionsgate has been winning by not playing into the streaming wars, which has been a huge benefit to the company. "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" is heading to digital on June 6, with video-on-demand availability starting June 27, 2023. There have not been any announced plans for streaming, but as the film is being distributed by Lionsgate, the film can end up on any number of the streaming platforms you know and love. While the film didn't recoup its budget at the box office, there are high hopes for the film's performance for those wanting to watch the film at home. After all, home is where no one can judge you for crying your face off.
How to own Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret on physical media
As streamers keep randomly purging their libraries, seemingly sending beloved films and series into the void, here's a perennial reminder that physical media is forever. Fortunately, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" will be available as a physical, tangible purchase, with Blu-ray, DVD, and DVD + Digital Combo releases coming on July 11, 2023. Sure, it's a little bit longer of a wait from the standard VOD options, but getting the film on a disc means it will remain in your library on your own terms. The film is being released with the suggested retail prices of $39.99 for Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Combo, and $29.96 for DVD.
