Jason Momoa Demanded That His Fast X Car Color Matched His Character's Nail Polish
It must really feel good to be Jason Momoa. Since his memorable turn as Khal Drogo in "Game of Thrones," Momoa has gone on to join the DC Universe as Aquaman, star in his own Apple+ TV series "See," and appear as the battle-tested warrior Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune." Momoa has certainly proven that he knows how to play the hero, and now he'll get a chance to play the villain in the upcoming blockbuster, "Fast X" opposite Vin Diesel. Momoa is keeping the theme of family going strong in the ongoing action franchise, playing Dante Reyes, the son of Hernan Reyes who died during the bank heist in "Fast Five."
The swagger that Dante shows in the "Fast X" trailers and footage up to this point mirrors Momoa's own charisma on and offscreen. The role seems tailor-made for the Hawaiian heartthrob, who is definitely injecting some of his own boho style and infectious personality into the part. Momoa always looks like he's having the time of his life when he's in front of the camera. That quality has never been more evident than it is now, and it's clear that the character of Dante has been partly crafted and curated around his real-life persona. From the start, Momoa has been involved with creating the look for Dante and even managed to acquire a custom-made Harley Davidson motorcycle for "Fast X" after calling up the CEO of the company directly.
Fast cars have always been a staple for the franchise, and Momoa wanted the Chevy Impala he races in "Fast X" to have a custom paint job as well so that he could color coordinate with Dante's nail polish. Yep, that sounds like him. And I love him for it.
'Boom, that's the color'
In a roundtable conversation attended by /Film's Jenna Busch, longtime "Fast & Furious" car supervisor Dennis McCarthy spoke about working with Momoa to get just the right shade to compliment his Impala:
"The color of the car, I was literally instructed to match the color of his fingernails via FaceTime. So we did that. We did some samples. I sent them back to Jason. He finally said, 'Boom, that's the color.'"
McCarthy has been the official Picture Car Coordinator for the franchise dating all the way back to 2006 with "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift." Over the course of the entire series, McCarthy has helped to choose the right car for the right character. The 1970 Dodge Charger that Dom drives is an extension of him, just as Paul Walker's Nissan GT-R feels right in line with what Brian O'Conner would take out for a night of street racing.
If this much attention to detail was put into getting just the right car for Momoa, his character Dante's Chevy Impala just might be the most custom-made vehicle yet. In another actor's hands, Dante may have been a little too serious for his own good, but Momoa's commitment to the role should help make him one of the most memorable, over-the-top villains of the entire series. For a franchise that has fun taking itself way too seriously, Momoa seems like a natural fit into the world of fast cars, outrageous heists, and extravagant melodrama that the Fast & Furious brand has carefully constructed over the last two decades.
