Tom Holland Isn't Off The Table For Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
Before Marvel Studios and director Jon Watts broke the collective minds of "Spider-Man" fans everywhere with "Spider-Man: No Way Home," the 2018 animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" assembled a team of Spider-Men first. Although "Spider-Verse" was the first to mark its claim on the crossover of Spider-Men, "No Way Home" had the distinct honor of being the first live-action film to do so. Moreover, "No Way Home" arguably had a bit more emotional resonance behind it because of the three generations of "Spider-Man" the film celebrates, with its trio of Spider-Men from all the previous mainline films and their villains.
But even before Jon Watt's third film in his "Homecoming" trilogy, there had been speculation about whether Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker would have a cameo in "Into the Spider-Verse." Tom Holland himself had revealed that he was supposed to record an ever-so-brief cameo, as he would describe it as an Easter egg of him just passing by Miles. While this didn't come to pass, there may still be hope. The highly anticipated sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," has more Spider-Men in it than ever seen in a film, animated or otherwise. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but producers behind the film have teased that there may still be a chance to see Tom Holland's Spider-Man get into more multiverse shenanigans.
'Anything is possible in the multiverse'
In the latest issue of Empire magazine, "Across the Spider-Verse" producer Christopher Miller was asked if there were any chance fans could see Tom Holland reprise his role as Peter Parker in the upcoming animated film, be it in a cameo or some other form. Miller provided an ambiguous answer to the question:
"Let's say... Anything is possible in the multiverse."
While this answer doesn't outright confirm that Holland's Spider-Man is in the film, that doesn't necessarily mean he will be in it, either. With all of the Easter eggs and references sprinkled throughout the first trailer, it could very well be the case that Holland's Spider-Man is in the film, albeit relegated to a background Spider-Man, with no vocal performance from Tom Holland. Still, it could be fun to see the MCU Spider-Man make an appearance, implying that his multiversal adventuring didn't begin and end with Doctor Strange.
Spider-Man's future in the MCU isn't as uncertain as it was years prior, as Sony and Marvel Studios already have another trilogy of "Spider-Man" films planned as was confirmed last year. Those films have no official date, and Tom Holland has expressed that he wants to take a break after "No Way Home." All of that to say is if he does have a cameo in the upcoming animated film, it will be his first "appearance" as the wall-crawler since the status quo-shattering ending of his third film. The implications of a cameo in the movie would be too good to pass up, as his iteration of the character has his own films to go back to and could even reference his appearance in the movie. As Miller himself said, anything is possible. All we can do is wait and see what happens when the film releases on June 2, 2023.
