The Scream 6 Trailer Is Full Of Horror Movie References

It would have been sacrilege to think of continuing "Scream" without Wes Craven at the helm, but earlier this year, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett proved that there was still a lot of gas left in the tank. Ghostface has been adopted by a whole new generation, and with it, an ensemble of memorable characters. "Scream VI" takes the surviving members of the 2022 massacre, along with "Scre4m" fan favorite Kirby, out of Woodsboro, and into the heavily populated New York City.

The Big Apple has been besieged by the Gremlins ("Gremlins 2: The New Batch") and Jason Voorhees ("Friday the 13th: Part VIII – Jason Takes Manhattan"), but now it's time for Ghostface to get in on the action. Although the highly anticipated teaser trailer for "Scream VI" is barely a minute long, it does an excellent job of raising the stakes.

The foundation of "Scream" was built upon tearing down the rules and tropes of horror past, and subverting them with something a bit closer to home. At the same time, it all comes from a place of reverence. The packed subway in the teaser implies that the sequence takes place around Halloween, and because of that, the car is loaded with costumed New Yorkers. In the teaser, not only are there other people donning the appearance of Ghostface, but also a bunch of familiar horror baddies as well.

Monster Mash aboard the subway

Right behind Melissa Barrera ("In the Heights"), Jenna Ortega ("Wednesday"), and Josh Segarra ("The Other Two") is someone dressed as the Babadook. Although given that they're in NY, there is a part of me that wants to believe it's the Bababook from "What We Do in the Shadows." On Ghostface's side of the train, in addition to the generic monster masks, I caught glimpses of a pretty awesome-looking Pinhead from "Hellraiser," someone dressed like Kayako from "The Grudge," and even Jason from "Friday the 13th" thrown in for good measure. The werewolf in the corner could possibly be any ol' wolfman, but the mask looks awfully similar to Peachfuzz from "Creep."

It should come as a surprise to absolutely no one how hard I smiled when I saw someone dressed as in Grace's wedding dress from "Ready or Not," which is even funnier knowing that Samara Weaving is part of the new blood this time. It wouldn't entirely shock me if Radio Silence took this as an opportunity for Ghostface to metaphorically take out a subway car of horror icons, especially when they start to fight back when things get bloody.

The setting is perfect for "Scream" because it's easy to recognize when an immortal killer in a hockey mask is trailing you, but the Ghostface mask makes it easy for anyone to slip in and out of the crowd in a pinch. It's harkening back to the opening of "Scream 2," when Maureen (Jada Pinkett Smith) is murdered in a theater full of moviegoers wearing the same outfit. Similar to that sequence, it looks like some poor soul isn't making it out alive.

"Scream VI" is set to hit theaters on March 10, 2023.
