wolfwalkers theaters

Wolfwalkers is storming theaters again. Fresh off its Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, the Cartoon Saloon film is getting a theatrical re-release courtesy of animation distributor GKIDS. While Wolfwalkers opened in a few theaters in the fall, the coronavirus led to most people seeing it on Apple TV+ in December, where it was greeted with universal acclaim. But as theaters are starting to slowly reopen and as the date of the 2021 Oscars ceremony nears, GKIDS is setting a new Wolfwalkers theatrical re-release in select theaters.

Ethan Anderton Top 10 Movies of 2020

In one of the most hellish years in recent memory, escaping to the movies became rather difficult, at least if you wanted to see them in theaters. Thankfully, through the magic of all the streaming services that we once complained about being too plentiful, we were still given a smorgasbord of cinema to feast upon, and it made for another challenging time for picking my favorite movies of the year. All of my Top 10 Films of 2020 were watched from the comfort of my home, but I wish I could have admired them from a cushy seat in front of a silver screen in order to absorb them even more completely.  Read More »

Hoai-Tran Bui’s Top 10 Films of 2020

Hoai-Tran Bui Top 10 Movies of 2020

There’s the temptation every year to say, “This was a bad year for movies,” which is rarely ever the case. But 2020 certainly flirted with that idea, with the pandemic pushing many studio films to next year and making all other films nearly impossible to watch without a press badge at a film festival. More than anything, it was a weird year for movies, a year where entertainment became a safe haven from the horrors of reality and where we all flocked to films that either comforted us, or numbed us, or dared us to find the awful parallels in our entertainment and the real world.

For me, my top movies of the year were a mixture of all of the above. I was equally comforted and challenged by these movies, or at the very least, I couldn’t stop thinking about them. Maybe that’s the kind of film that will define 2020, the one that captures that weird mixed bag of emotions that kept us going through the purgatory of quarantine.

Anyway, here are my top 10 movies of 2020.

The MovieWolfwalkers

Where You Can Stream It: Apple TV+

The Pitch: The daughter of a wolf hunter, Robyn, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn encounters a wild native girl, Mebh, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

Why It’s Essential Viewing: There’s a tendency to ignore any animated movies that don’t come from Disney or Pixar, and write off the rest as either too arthouse or too kiddy. And it would be a real shame if anyone did such a thing with Wolfwalkers, the latest masterpiece from Cartoon Saloon, the Irish animation studio behind such films as The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and The Breadwinner. The culmination of Cartoon Saloon’s works, Wolfwalkers is a stunning, breathtaking paradigm of 2D animation as well as a heckuva entertaining adventure flick.

wolfwalkers review

Hand-drawn animation is a fast-disappearing art in a medium that has come to value mass appeal and mass production over the careful study of tradition. It’s a bittersweet reality that resonates strongly with Cartoon Saloon’s latest animation masterwork, Wolfwalkers. A dazzling, majestic love letter to the disappearing Irish folklore that was once so prevalent all over the country, and that once nestled in the hearts of all its people, Wolfwalkers is about that last gasp of a bygone era and the wonder that it still holds.
