Dora and the Lost City of Gold Review

At first blush, a feature film based on the Nick Jr. cartoon Dora the Explorer seems like a non-starter. The show, designed to help preschoolers grasp Spanish-language terms for English phrases, doesn’t scream out for the cinematic treatment, and definitely not the live-action feature treatment. Yet such a film now exists: Dora and the Lost City of Gold both manages to broadly acknowledge its inspiration while cutting its own path as a tween-friendly version of Indiana Jones. It’s a surprisingly funny blend of fish-out-of-water comedy and adventure, even if the familiarity is hard to ignore.

For all the kids who watched Nickelodeon’s younger-skewing programming from Nick Jr. anytime from the year 2000 through 2014, now is the time for your nostalgic moment.

The educational animated series Dora the Explorer has been turned into a live-action adventure film from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon. Transformers: The Last Knight star Isabela Moner is playing the titular adventurer in Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and even though her parents send her off on an adventure to experience public school for the first time, of course she gets caught up in the search for an ancient city. Dora the Explorer Movie - Danny Trejo as Boots

Believe it or not, that Dora the Explorer movie is arriving in theaters late this summer, and we’re about to get a glimpse of what we can expect when the first trailer drops this weekend during the Kids Choice Awards on Nickelodeon. But before the trailer even arrives for Dora and the Lost City of Gold, we’ve already got a perplexing piece of information about the adaptation of the animated series for kids.

Yesterday, along with the first theatrical posters for the Dora the Explorer movie, Machete star Danny Trejo confirmed that he’s providing the voice for Dora’s best animal friend Boots, a money who wears, you guessed it, a machete.
