'Justice League Dark' Concept Art: See Swamp Thing, Constantine & More From Joseph Kahn's Pitch

While the union of the Justice League only just happened on the big screen for the first time last month, their darker, fantasy counterparts from Justice League Dark have been in development for years. The project has gone through several directors, including Guillermo del Toro a little while back and most recently Edge of Tomorrow helmer Doug Liman, but it's currently without a director as a new script from Housebound scribe Gerard Johnstone is being written right now. However, as we wait to see what happens with the DC Comics property, we can imagine what it might have been like if another filmmaker ended up getting hired for the job.

Joseph Kahn is best known for directing music videos for the likes of Taylor Swift, Eminem, Katy Perry and Britney Spears. More recently he directed the acclaimed rap battle indie film Bodied, but at one point, Kahn was in the running to director Justice League Dark, and he recently revealed some of the concept art that was part of his pitch.

Check out the Justice League Dark concept art revealed by Joseph Kahn below.

For those who don't know, Justice League Dark is a team of superheroes from the darker corners of the DC Comics universe. The team features many of the most powerful magical and supernatural heroes, making them better equipped to deal with supernatural threats than the regular Justice League would ever be. The team's roster has gone through plenty of members over the years, but here are four of the heroes Joseph Kahn had on his iteration of the team, posted by the filmmaker on Twitter:

The art in question comes from Ironklad Studios, specifically the talented concept artist Justin Goby Fields.

As you can see, there's Swamp Thing, John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman and Jason Blood. Not only are the designs outstanding, especially for Swamp Thing, but his wishlist casting choices for Constantine, Zatanna and Jason Blood are outstanding as well. If you can't tell, that's Beauty and the Beast star Dan Stevens as Constantine, Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer as Zatanna and 12 Years a Slave star Chiwetel Ejiofor as Jason Blood.

For all you Swamp Thing fans out there, Joseph Kahn also posted this piece of test animation that he created in order to show off how the fireflies would circle Swamp Thing wherever he was:

Unfortunately, it appears that Joseph Kahn didn't end up with the job. This was likely created around the time Warner Bros. was looking for a new director after Guillermo del Toro left the project, and that search resulted in Doug Liman getting hired for a little while. Now the film is without a director again, so maybe there's a chance Joseph Kahn could end up back in the running.

There's no reason given as to why Warner Bros. decided not to go with Joseph Kahn's pitch, but based on these character designs, I'm wishing we could have gotten a chance to see what he can do with the supernatural comic book characters. Of course, since the future of DC Comics properties at Warner Bros. is in a bit of a state of flux right now, we probably shouldn't get too excited to see Justice League Dark moving forward anytime soon. Since the primary Justice League didn't live up to box office expectations for the studio, I can't imagine them taking trying something a little more risky like this just yet.

For any updates on the status of Justice League Dark, stay tuned.
