Han Solo's 'Star Wars Story' Will Show Us At Least One Iconic Piece Of The Smuggler's History

Just before the weekend, Disney dropped some big news by confirming that Community and Atlanta star Donald Glover had landed the role of a young Lando Calrissian in the forthcoming Star Wars Story that will focus on the earlier career of the famous smuggler Han Solo, played by Alden Ehrenreich. Now one more detail has surfaced regarding the events we'll see unfold.

Find out one of the new Han Solo spin-off story details after the jump.

Previously the only information we knew about Han Solo's Star Wars Story, besides the two aforementioned cast members, is that it will be directed by 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie filmmaking duo Phil Lord & Chris Miller with a script from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon Kasdan. There have been a few assumptions about where the story might venture in Han Solo's past, and one of them seems to have been confirmed.

The Hollywood Reporter journalist Borys Kit revealed on Twitter that a couple sources have told him that the Han Solo spin-off will reveal how he won the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian. That's been something fans have presumed would be revealed, but this is the first we've heard that this detail will be included from sources behind the scenes.

In the original Star Wars canon, now regarded as Legends, Han Solo won the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian in a game of sabacc, a high stakes card game. Though the game is never mentioned in the movies, there is an exchange between Lando and Han in Empire Strikes Back indicating that the smuggler won it from Lando at some point. One would assume that an entirely new explanation will be given in the spin-off as to how that happened.

But surely that can't be the entire focus of the movie, right? I mean, I suppose if Han Solo's goal is to get the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian, the end of the movie could see him achieving that goal and leading into a sequel. After all, there was a rumor Alden Ehrenreich was signed on for a Han Solo trilogy. However, I think it would be better if he won the ship earlier on in the movie and then went in a different direction.

What I'd really love to see is a Cannonball Run or early Fast and Furious kind of movie in space where the spin-off focuses on some kind of galactic race, perhaps the Kessel Run that Han Solo famously completed in less than 12 parsecs. That would be unlike any other Star Wars movie we've seen before, and it would make for some great action sequences. Of course, maybe the Kessel Run isn't just a race, but some kind of crowning achievement in the smuggling world.
